What did you do in the Apiary today?

I think bee colonies were smaller then as feral colonies often are today in hollow trees, I come across some really small colonies., it's why all this stuff about bees needing 17 / 20kg of stores for winter is not really factual, especially if it isn't even possible to fit that much in. Anyway...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went to http://www.menigoute-festival.org/ and saw this lovely hive, apparently about 150 years old. Chris

What did you do in the Apiary today?

The real danger isn't from a boar attacking you - that's close to zero likelihood, they either run away or maybe just stare at you and then run away. The danger is if you hit one in your car, that's where deaths and serious injuries occur here. Chris

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I suspect that may not be UK and yes, they do wander about in daylight at this time of year especially on dull days, plenty of them here - had some young ones running through the other day. Chris

    Asian Hornet

Called out to this one today in a wall, the nest had out grown the cavity as can be seen. and don't forget this for basics. http://wildlifeinfrance.com/asian-hornet-vespa-velutina-nigrithorax-frelon-asiatique.html Chris

    Asian Hornet

I have experienced no aggressiveness from them and I like to get very close to creatures. Issues where they have arisen have been the usual for "wasps" when they feel that they or the colony is threatened. Sting toxicity depends on the specifics of the person stung, also as usual, but painful...

    Asian Hornet

The problem with shooting the nest is it only disperses the Queens given most nests are only visible in Autumn.... ....however I have had two reports in the last couple of weeks of Asian Hornets nesting in cavities, one a hollow tree, the other a stone wall which will make destruction easier...

    Wasps

The point was if you read the thread that wasps in roofs isn't the same as wasps in the colony proper. which is where you say you frequently find Queen wasps. Something I have never encountered either here in France, Germany or the UK and never heard of this from any of the large number of...

    Wasps

Under the roof isn't the issue, see these paper wasps from one of my hive lids, they are still there happy as can be. It's the "inside the hive" notion that I have problems with, my bees would never tolerate that. Chris

    Wasps

Really? I'd be interested in how many keepers have experienced overwintering "wasp queens" in their hives. There are two factors here, one is that "wasp queens" aren't actually hibernating yet either here in France or in the UK and the other is that no functioning honey bee colony would accept...

    Woodpeckers

In my "garden" I have resident Lesser, Middle and Greater spotted Woodpeckers plus Green and Black Woodpeckers and never have any of them shown an interest in my hives what ever the weather. Chris

    Finman

It's conspicuous by its absence in my part of the world although there are plenty of the smaller willow herbs, this is from my "garden". Chris
