An offer of location, bees and hives all paid for

West London. I didnt put the location details in initially as I wanted responses from anyone who had similar experience. It isn't an offer for any beekeepers living close, but a request for advice/information about the best way forward for an accomplished or commercial beekeeper. I am...

An offer of location, bees and hives all paid for

Hi all, I have just completed my 1st season of beekeeping (but have been researching for about 3 years) and whilst visiting a hospitality business near where I work, received an enquiry regarding the possibility of the business buying some bees and hives for their roof, from which they would get...

    Heating hives over winter

Quick question / idea. Does anyone have experience of or any ideas relating to a low heat under the hive during winter nights to help keep the temperature more even and therefore less bee deaths? I realise that some hives (including observation hives) are indoors with external exits. Do these...

    Cloudy honey

Thankyou for all your replies. I will digest and use the ones I can. The microwave idea may be more difficult in the jar, as it has the metal wire hinged lids (Like the budweiser bottle tops). Could always decant into another recepticle, but also as many have said - If it tastes nice as it is...

    Cloudy honey

OK, so my first year, and still/always learning! I recently extracted a super of honey producing 4.5 kg of honey after going through my double stainless steel strainer. Placed straight into a plastic bucket to settle, rather than a tank which would need cleaning and obvious wastage to a certain...

    Bees in allotments

The allotment holder I bought my bees from had signs with emergency contact numbers on. There was a recent thread (something I hadn't even considered) regarding the effect of bonfire smoke on the hives. Something to consider prior to setting up maybe. Good luck. My allotment assoc will not...

    A/S and wasps

Try and close the entrance down as much as possible. The wasps have had one of my hives, occupied it all and either drove out or more likely killed all the bees.

    Good or Bad year?

So I have asked all the 1st year beeks if they have started well. Now for all the experienced beeks:- I have had a pretty poor year (as guaged by myself!) I am in East Oxfordshire. 2 hives, no honey to remove. A couple of swarms and queen problems. Has this year been a good year for you and...

    Your 1st year

Hi everyone. This is my first year in beekeeping and after the numerous mistakes, lack of equipment and bad weather situations, I am wandering who else is in their first year and how have you got on. I now have two hives, not as many bees as I would like and no honey to remove, however am...

    My wasp traps in pics

Who would you like to see instead? I had some leftover bottles from the above mentioned shop. I wanted to explain the items used to help others. I am not affiliated to them in anyway. I am not advertising for them. I am being a responsible person by recycling my waste in a useful way. Surely...

    My wasp traps in pics

Neil, thanks for your comments. I can see what you are saying. However before the traps and when the traps were full, (i was on hold for a week) there were lots around the hive. The traps are drawing those away from the hives and containing them from returning with reinforcements. In my opinion...

    My wasp traps in pics

The wasps are already around my hive. By placing further away, they are robbing the hive, not being caught in the trap. The traps I have away from the hive do not get anywhere near as many as the ones at the heart of the problem. I was prompted to take action because of the increased wasps...

    My wasp traps in pics

On the small concentrated squash bottles, I cut on the second groove down. This means that when placed together, the "bulge" on the top section fits into the bulge on the top of the lower section. Very secure. On the others, tape would probably help. Dave.

    My wasp traps in pics

My home made wasp trap design. Made using info from the beekeeping forum. Tesco cheap squash bottle or similar. Cut top off, remove lid and invert over base. Place gravel in bottom to steady in windy conditions. Partially fill the bottom (over gravel but below upturned lid) with 1:2 sugar...

    Proud of my bees

I haven't taken a pic, but used some small empty value concentrated squash bottles. The cut was made on the second inverted ring down on the bottle. This allowed the top half to locate within the lower half, the horizontal ribs sitting inside the opposite half. Think of it as a funnel in a jar...

    Proud of my bees

Today, I went to inspect the wasp traps that I had placed out last Monday. I found those that hadn't fallen over were full of wasps and I thank those on here that gave their wasp recipe out. 1:2 sugar/water, a teaspoon of jam and some vinegar in the halved and top upturned cordial plastic...

    Who breaks 'the rules' then?

:iagree: I think rules should be relisted as guidance. When I started woodturning, I went to a wood working show where one "expert" stated that he had never had a lesson. He did however state that as long as what he did was safe, who is there to say that the process should be carried out one way...
