    Wax moulds

I have been looking at the Ickowicz website for all things French beekeeping and noticed that they have some wax moulds in various sizes in copper for making blocks. Does anyone know where I can get these in the UK. I don't see them on the usual suppliers websites. Thanks

    Heated uncapping trays

I saw these in the catalogue and thought they look like a great idea. Then I read Ted Hooper and he says not to get one as heating the honey bit will increase the HMF content. Now I am confused. Are they a good idea or not and do they really spoil the honey that is extracted from the cappings?

    Children's Bee Suits

I bought my seven year old just a jacket like me as I dont wear overtrousers when beekeeping. Big mistake as he got stung through his jeans during an inspection one day. I would therefore recommend buying a full suit.

    A sense of identity

I have two colonies both named after their queens. The queens were named by my daughter and are called Elizabeth and Victoria.

    This years "Cock Up's"

I was swapping over the apiguard and the remains of the first pack slipped off the foil and slid down between two frames. I was not really kitted up for a full inspection so I just left it. I did notice some bits of capping and pupae on the floor over the next few days. Will it have done any...

    Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera)

My bees have been bringing this in for the last month and were still busy bringing it in this morning.

    Balsam Honey

I know that my colony has been bring in hymalayan balsam honey and I took it off two weeks ago. It has quite a distinct flavour and wondered what others thought of it. My view is that it is ok but I have tasted better.

Garden beekeepers: What are your bees foraging on?

I am lucky enough to live by a river and they are still going for the balsam. Warm day today and clouds of bees flying to the river and back and still coming in with the white stripes on their backs. Apiguard on for a week now and mite drop has doubled from the normal 3 to 4 per week to 8 per...

    New Beek and First Honey

Just had to post as I took my first ever honey off a hive today. V excited as I was not sure I would get any in my first year. I forgot to get a porter bee escape so brushed the bees back into the brood box. Man they were cross. Only 2 kgs of honey but I wanted to take it off so that I...

    Puzzled

It was supersedure. The new queen has hatched and i just have to wait again for her to start laying. They were pretty cross when I went into look today. Still lots of capped brood, honey, pollen and some drone brood. No eggs though so I guess that is why they replaced a new laying queen but...

    Puzzled

Thanks for your opinions folks. I am going to leave them and see what happens. As you said they have swarmed already this year so I would think that they are much less likely to do it again. There is space for the queen to lay. While she was not laying the bees cleaned up all of the old brood...

    Puzzled

I did put a super on as they had drawn out 9 of the 11 frames in the brood box. There were quite a few bees in it last night but they are not drawing out comb in the super.

    Puzzled

Ok so here is the situation. Hive swarmed just over 4 weeks ago. They left behind 10 queen cells. I went through and destroyed all but one of them. She hatched, I saw her 3days after hatching and started laying about two and a half weeks later. So now they have pollen, honey capped brood...
