What's the difference - between Frames?

This confused me a lot when I first started but I think that you need to see them in action before you make your mind up whats best. You can also put frames on castellations within the hive to ensure the correct spacing or have flat runners with spacers. I watched a few manipulations at our...

Newbie here - is there not a newbie section??

Just coming to the end of my first year of keeping bees. I did the reading recommended. Attended a beginners course with my local BKA and have used this forum extensively. The mix is great. They senior advisors on here are much more open to changes in modern beekeeping than some of the...

    Boiler suits to bee suits?

I buy mine from Claro Bees in Harrogate but they are also available at Th***es. Check at the bottom of the Jackets and Veils Page. £6.76 but I think that is net of VAT and postage. Our BKA has a box of them for demonstrations/ practicals.

    Boiler suits to bee suits?

We just use the occasional use all in one smocks that some of the larger beekeeping website stock. They are about £8 or £9 each and easily stand up to moderate use. The disadvantace is that the once on you cannot take of the veil without taking off the whole smock. They are however perfectly...

My best bee photo to date

I would not be in favour of a competition. We look after and assist bugs so why do we have to be competitive? I will never take part in a honey show although I understand why people do. Humans just like taking everything to extremes. I just thought it was a great photo to share so no worries...

My best bee photo to date

My son got a lovely photo of one of our bees last weekend when we were moving a hive. This was sitting on his arm as he took the photo.

    Smoker fuel

I just used the shredded cardboard that Thor**s use in their packaging for the first time and it works a treat. Topped it off with some dried leylandi clippings for 30 minutes of cool smoke when moving hives on Sunday.

    Landing Boards Pros and Cons

Both of my hives have landing boards and they are attached to the stand and not to the hive. I wimped out of making them in the end and bought the Tho***s ones. They are not cheap but very quick and easy to put together. The benefits of a landing board are it is much easier to see what is...

    Myxomatosis

I used to work with an gamekeeper in the Banchory area who shot rabbits with a silenced .22 gun. He said if he missed the rabbits would just think it was a bee whizzing by!

Hive at school? Am I mad?

It looks to be covered in terms of preparation of risk assessments etc on the BBKA website. I dont know if your school subscribes to the service mentioned. Here is the link http://************************/news/current_news/beekeeping-in-schools.shtml

    ran out of fondant.

It is not that hard to make. After a few unsuccessful attempts I would recommend a sugar thermometer and boiling for a few minutes at soft boil. My first few attempts I did not boil it long enough and it did not set.

    Warm way or cold way?

I am about to set up two new hives and wondered if there is a body of opinion on which works best. Warm way is frames parallel to the hive entrance and cold way is perpendicular to the entrance. Let the voting commence.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Cleared an area 5m by 4m for my new apiary. Watched one hive being very busy bringing in loads of pollen and the other one is much quieter. I spoke to my neighbour (ex beekeeper) and he thinks I should consider requeening the slow hive.

live stock or part of the family

When it is all all going to rats in the house a bit of peace in the garden watching the bees is very welcome. They are definitely just two colonies of bees though.

is beekeeping an old mans game?

I started when I was 8 helping out with a friend of my parents who kept bees. Got my own bees at 45 and now teaching my kids who are 8, 13 and 15. I have to say that the younger generation love it and I always have help on hand when visiting the bees. They are very keen to help with honey...
