What did you do in the Apiary today?

What's wrong? Few insulation in winter, good ventilation (through roofs in my hives), cold hives, quiet bees, no brood, no problems. I have styrofoam in roofs, other men have some kind of pillows etc. All beekeepers of our forum has no insulation, only a thin pillow on tops. I watched many...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

The roofs have insulation 3 cm styrofoam. The space between styrofoam and a nest is 3 cm. Nests also are covered with thick cloth. More insulation in winter is more moisture and problems (early brood, spoiled honey). The weather was quite mild in general.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Until the end of this month we have cold weather (-15 at night). The most difficult periond has started. Many colonies already have brood. I checked on them and added frames with food under the nests. Two colonies happend to be near starvation. Sometimes it's easy to see whether a colony has...

    Good morning, colleagues

Thank you for your questions. I'm very pleased. Our parlament voted the law about beekeeping many years ago. Nevertheless this law is rather formal than real. It includes the plan of races allowed in different regions. In fact bekeepers have the races which they want. We also have a state...

    Spring varoa treatment

There may be snow or good warm weather here at that time. I'll try it in several hives. What do you mean "trickling"? We use it as a spray, spraying every frame with bees. The only recomendation here is killiing mites with all possible weapon. I'm searching for organic methods. Our beekeepers...

    Spring varoa treatment

The first yield is expected to be in July. During several weeks after the cleance flight colonies don't grow. Until July their nests will be rebuilt, new combs will be added. There must be no any residues or smell of thymol. Usually at the end of March, sometimes earlier. Now it is -2 +2°C and...

    Spring varoa treatment

I'm going to use thymol after the cleance flight in spring. I have already used it in autumn. It didn't eliminate all mites but reduced infestation. In my opinion hot weather in August (more that +27) prevented thymol to work efficiently. This method is described by Eric Osterlund from Sweden...

    Good morning, colleagues

Ok. Winter "Cold" is a temperature lower than -10 (usually at night). If air is humid it feels like colder. Average winter is between -5 +5. Now it is 0°.This winter is warm. Almost all days of December was +. There were just two weeks with -15 at night and -10 in the daytime in January. The...

Using frames in a horizontal hive?

You're right. My first hives were horizantal with 20-24 dadan frames. Something like this: I don't have them any more for the reason of transportation. As for queens, you know, even if a queen is a good one when honey flow starts bees quickly fill all combs limiting a queen so there may be no...

    Good morning, colleagues

I don't know much about British beekeeping but I know that British weather is very different, so beekeeping differs in some aspects as well. Now I can see that our beekeeping becomes more professional and commercial oriented than it was a decade ago. For example, the most discussed subjects of...

    Good morning, colleagues

May I introduce myself for this respectful community. My name is Eugene. Podilia is a historical name of the south western part of Ukraine. My region is a good place for beekeeping. From my childhood I like nature, gardening, animals, insects etc. I collected bugs, butterflyes and all such...
