What did you do in the Apiary today?

Last weekend I checked all colonies and added the frames with honey to some of them. They already have brood. Three colonies will not survive for sure. This is not bad result for me. This winter is warmest in the history of observation, scientists say. My bees made the cleanse flight in December...

    Sugar syrup good or bad!

May be better in the US? I often watch the reports showing americans, even state officials, without teeth. A dentist is a wealthy person here though the service is not expensive. A few years ago I had a hole in a tooth, I paid 15 Є for the treatment. People who don't care have bad teeth. Last...

    Sugar syrup good or bad!

I assure you the significant part of EU honey has another origin. For example when a truck with Ukrainian honey crosses the Polish border, that honey through many agents and processes of mixing gets a label Made in EU, Czech, Poland or something else.

    Sugar syrup good or bad!

365 kg per year? Earlier you wrote about 40 kg per year. it's too much. I don't eat so much even with food. People may have unhealthy habits. They prefer sweets, candy, chocolate, cakes instead of fruits, honey, natural juice. The fact is that your bees can't overwinter without sugar. The same...

    Sugar syrup good or bad!

Honey depends on weather. I think natural selection took place in such mountain regions as Carpathian mountains where local bees were really adapted for bad weather and poor flow. According to the reseach they take the nectar with less % of sugar compare to steppe bees who just ignore such...

    Sugar syrup good or bad!

There are a lot of much worse things around bees destroing their health and our human's health as well: pollution of air and water, agressive methods of agriculture, monocultures, destoyed natural diversity etc. Sugar syrup in my opinion is somewhere in the last place in this long list. Feed in...

    best time of the year

It's not the best season for me. May was cold and rainy. Many colonies were too weak after winter. Then June was unseasonably dry and warm (30 C). I extracted some osr honey and until sunflower was empty because of a drought. Swarms also were small. I catched 10 or 12 swarms, only half of them...

    Honey section Apimondia

Ukraine was presented by the Association of Exporters (those guys who're robbing beekeepers constantly downing the prisce of honey), The Union of Ukrainian beekeepers (corrupted organisation with hardly 2000 members, which tries to be the only one true organisation of ua beekeepers). By the way...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Interesting information. Does Britain produse sugar or import it? My country grows sugar beet and pruduses sugar. Sure this is not the volume of the past but it is still enough. Most of the factories were destroyed by mafia. They sold the equipment abroad as a metal scrap. Today sugar costs in...

    foundationless frames

I tried foundationless method for two summers. Now I returned to the foundation. In my opinion it's not so important whether foundation is natural or unnatural in a hive. It's more important (for me) that a foundation is clear without parafin and other residues. Therefore I'm going to make my...

This year summer crop, any good?

This summer is expected to be the worst for beekeeping in Ukraine. There are two reasons: pesticides and weather. I've heard about the heatwave in France. We had almost the same wave during whole June. The temperature of 30-35°C was every day. This is far more than 23°C climate norm. This may be...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thunderstorms almost every day, 27C, good weather for swarming. My apiary is still in the backyard which is more safe place for bees now. The bees look much better than last year after the chemical shower. But I can't make splits - no free place here, my backyard is just 0,06 ha. The chemical...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I'm not sure that clearly understand this piece of English humour but the weather is getting warm and pleasant as it must be in May. Today I checked the rest of the hives, added suppers, foundations etc. The scent of fresh nectar has appeared in the apiary after almost the week of rains when...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

The same here. Snow in Carpathian. Several days were really cold for May. Now the weather is improving but thunderstorms are expected as well.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hi, gentlemen. I have found the proper time between rains to open some hives. The process is slower than usually. These rains and cold weather are coming from Atlantic and blocked over Ukraine by the area of high pressure over Russia. The temp. in Siberia is up to 30 Celsius that is too much for...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Good weather is here. The girls are busy on apricots, wild plums. Cherry, apple and others will be in a few days. Added a few frames with honey to bigger colonies. I'm going to the veterinary service. They say, if you want your bees to avoid pesticides register your apiary - this is the only...

One new reason to winter losses

Of course, no. Sometimes there are strange videos but bees are able to overcome the most of our mistakes. Pesticides are the main reason. Thefts? I can't believe they are exist in Britain - the center of civilization etc... :)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

What are the reasons of big losses around? In my opinion your market is relatively small. For example, here people sell and purchase bees nevertheless the endless economic depression, pesticides etc. Of course, our market has also fallen significantly. We are in really hard conditions now...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

My landscape is not so bright. Apricots showed first white teeth. Colonies are not growing yet. My strongest hives (not many) have 8-9 dadant frames. I don't now haw many brood, maybe on 3-4 frames. The weather is warm and pleasant but from Thursday it's going to be colder and wet.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Intresting report. Thanks. It was another story, but no matter. That man I mentioned about had mostly log hives and he didn't respect conventional hives.
