    Cleaning honey extractors

Hi Ben. The regulations do allow for small producers to supply small quantities of produce to the end user or local retailer supplying the end user. Definition of small and local is a bit woolly. But if you are selling your 100lbs direct to the consumer (or a local shop) then all good. If you...

    Cleaning honey extractors

Guessing it could have been around the time the 2004 regulations came in? It is a really difficult balancing act sometimes. Where I work we have many 500 year old plus buildings with food businesses in them and you need to balance what business are able to do (financial, practically and in...

    Cleaning honey extractors

Off the top of my head I can't recall the active chemicals in the different brands. Most of them have instructions that you spray it on leave for a set length of time (30 seconds to 5 mins depending on brand) and then wipe off with a clean cloth. As for how long it lasts, it lasts until it is...

It's going to be a late one

Keep us posted on the results, be interested to hear what the results are and how it compares to the different jars in the photo. Brave move getting specific labels printed and stuck on before the results are back. You lose any naivety defence " we just assumed it was clover etc." If the result...

    Cleaning honey extractors

As an EH officer I would be unlikely to take environmental swabs or samples of honey when doing a food hygiene inspection or following a complaint (unless there was a very specific reason). However I would be looking that food business operator was using appropriate cleaning processes/products...

It's going to be a late one

The CBI factsheet says" in order for the honey to be called monofloral:  Underrepresented pollen (e.g. coffee) must constitute more than 20% of the total pollen content  Normally represented pollen (e.g. clover) must constitute more than 45% of the total pollen content  Overrepresented...

Vaping from above or below? And what about the OMF?

Same blow torch I have with mine, find it works well. I just stuff it in the entrance and seems to work fine. Most of my floors are solid though.

    More osr around this autumn/winter

My dad used to take colonies to the borage in east Yorkshire when there was plenty about (20 years ago) and got some phenomenal yields and it always sold well. Would be at 1 colony per acre and typically large 30acre plus arable fields. I had a few arces of borage cover crop next to one of my...

    AMM imports?

Unless the mating apiaries are in some way isolated I guess. Don't know enough about Greece or Greek beekeeping to know if that is even feasible.

It's going to be a late one

I have settled on 4 labels. 3/4lbs soft set spring honey, 3/4lb runny summer honey. 1/2lbs heather. And 1/2lb "special batch" for anything unusual. Then attach a tag label explaining what is in the special batch for example this year buckwheat.

Ah but it is ", fully operational. no dents or scratches" 😆 Though how you could see a scratch under that rust!

    Cleaning honey extractors

Depends on where you buy them from and how they have been stored. If on pallet seal wrapped straight from producer they should be ok to use straight away. If in boxes I always rinse, the concern with glass packaging is less about microbial contamination/sterilising and more about ensuring...

    Cleaning honey extractors

As it is used in food production I would still recommend sterilising it with a suitable solution. It would certainly be expected if environmental health ever followed up on honey sales and honey is not always sterile.

Pressure washer. Then hot water and finish with a food safe BS EN 1276 spray is what I do with my extraction equipment

    MeliBio "honey"

Its American so not sure of the regs there. But if imported to UK would need to be called something else I guess.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

That is true, you can leave one bottom bar out and then put foundation in in separate session. What everway you do it frames are a chore. Even buying ready made up and wired requires tightening and embedding which is still monotonous. Frame prep is definitely my least favourite part of bee keeping

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Even quicker if you make a jig up and do 10 at once. As demonstrated by Ian stapler

    Plastic foundation

I would definitely try and have them draw it in spring /summer before the heather. Did you coat it with wax first Stiffy?
