    Which ones do you prefer

Hi Sanntos Thanks for sharing that. What a simple method for feeding and bulk feeding in one go at that... The bees clearly take the syrup down and store it well and the simplicity of the method does indeed save on feeders and cleaning them - just need a bale of straw and plastic bags and a...

    Which ones do you prefer

interesting idea that. I've got a fair number of the Thornes large plastic feeders they occasionally put in their sale - have built up numbers over the years...and find that in some no bees escape under the plastic feed cover and in others for no apparent reason I get bees managing to squeeze...

Thinking of making boxes from pallet wood.

On making beehives out of pallet wood - yes it's entirely possible but a few thoughts.. 1. alot of pallets are treated for rot and pests - be careful not to use these for beehives 2. turning pallet wood into indoor wood products - fine - as it is dry and doesn't flex. If you leave pallet wood...

    Come on Spring...

interesting proverb that, Bumble. On the prices front I took the plunge and ordered a few pallets of jars last night to shield me from the increases from1/2/22 Has anyone else got some money saving ideas (beekeeping related) ?

    Come on Spring...

Days like this where one is laid up feeling pretty awful (had all the symptoms of C-19 since Friday but no +ve result) means I delve into the library of books and periodicals I've amassed over the years and start re-reading and re-visiting articles that caught my eye and thinking about the...

Backyard Beekeeping - The Story So Far

Well shaking out the entire hive into a hedge is what was recommended with CPBV originally. I've seen no link in my own bees from naturalised vs imported getting it. Good luck for your 2022 season

    Beekeepers Professions

I've always worked. Started helping my Dad carry bricks and pushing barrows at his building sites (he was a part time builder and teacher) and as soon as I could I took all the work I could get at weekends and evenings - pot washing, table waiting, worked in a chippy, car accessory retail. Paid...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

Yes and if I heard you I’d know you were talking about the real thing, or a nice lady you saw in your youth….not talking about some vegan pretend trash food

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

Yes and just because she dropped the ‘O’ and used a ‘U’ instead doesn’t change the way it’s pronounced . Therefore it shouldn’t be called anything that can be misconstrued as Honey

    Sales

Maisemore used to have a January Poly sale but aren't this year. Their next is in June. As long as the foundation is kept sealed in the bag and in the dark and not crushed or allowed to sweat (ie in a thin walled shed it will warp) then it'll be fine for a few years.

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

You're right the BBKA do the square root of sod'all in this respect and would rather encourage people to sign misleading petitions about pesticide derogations that aren't even on a bee-friendly crop DEFRA and the Agricultural departments aren't interested either. what would it take for people...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

I've seen their advert a few times now and it is really starting to grind my gears I think they are being entirely disingenuous in their claims. They don't 'support' British bees. Yes they fund something towards the BFA led apprenticeship scheme (amount undisclosed) but they don't buy or supply...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

I think you'll find the definition of honey for sale and produced in the UK includes reference to it being ripe honey not subject to evaporation techniques post extraction. If this is the case then you could argue in court that any honey coming from non-EU sources could potentially and likely if...

    Winter Work

the feedback on whether you have Omicron or t'other depends on which Lab your PCR test is sent to as some have the ability to work out the variant and some don't and from today PCRs aren't to be used if you don't have symptoms yet test +ve on a LFT ... It's all tickety-boo until the next...
