    This year's honey price

depends on what you drink. Can still get the odd decent pint, especially directly from local breweries, below a fiver. Most at that price are bland generic rubbish more suited to slug traps, kept cheep by the size of manufacturing and tied houses. £10 and rest is not unusual in London if not...

    Extractor

if you are free on 24th recommend visiting the beekeeping show at Telford. All the major manufacturers will be there so you can actually see the extractors first hand. There are usually show discounts to be had. You might feel a 20 frame extractor is over kill with 10 hives, but it future...

Bees forage on fungi amongst other things

All about money Phil and avoiding litigation in the USA. Would cost a lot to get the evidence that this would require to get approval as a new treatment. $1M doesn't actually go very far when it comes to development, GMP manufacturing and trial costs. Anyone investing this would expect a return...

    Pure Amm, the value

Bit like the re-introduction of the (blue)black passport in the UK following Brexit. One can be so very smug with having the 'right' colour that they fail to see the other failings associated with it

    Tom Seeley new book

Yes, spot on. He mentioned something along the line of he was trying to make the theory more accessible to all rather than just those who would have waded through his more technical books

    Tom Seeley new book

I was lucky enough to attend a talk by Prof Tom Seeley earlier in the week giving a few highlights from his new book to be published in April. This wasn't recorded to avoid content being released before the book. I thought the presentation was very interesting and accessible, and I will be...

    Hybrids & defensive/aggressive behaviour

usual rubbish from an 8 hive beekeeper trying to save the cheerleeder. Plenty of beekeepers who don't to follow your example of the black bee in Ireland post on here. None of them seemed ignorant or greedy. They just want the freedom to do as they wish without someone else imposing...

Roof connector for Steam Generator Pipe?

Its more for safety IMO. A loose steam hose can spray all over the place, and in your case the electrics to turn it off is behind the steamer in the shed.

    GasVap

Yes, will likely melt any paint on the landing board. Could try using high temperature silicone tubing to insulate the vent. these silicone plugs are available for the instavap as an example. if using the extension tube for the gasvap be aware that the gasvap needs to be warmed up for longer...

    New EU honey labelling rules.

IIRC, the British Honey Importers and Packers Association response to the EU's proposed update to honey labelling was that it was "over zealous". Not a particularly helpful public comment IMO

    Bbka magazine

I used to work with with a guy who had a polished coprolite on his desk (fossilized dinosaur poo). Whenever ***** happened and someone mentioned you couldn't polish a turd, he would point to the fossil

How much can you read without opening up the hive?

I find it slight baffling that you seem to justify your reluctance to kill off queen cells as a function of a non invasive regime yet through swarming, are potentially condemning many swarms to die off during their first over winter, if not collected or inhumed by a a pestie. back to OP. I...

    New book on Apideas

As others have said a good book. @DanBee in a previous response from last year you mentioned the webinars were available, but don't seem to be now, unless I sign up for a 14 day trial?

    Does peroxide kill nosema ?

liquid hydrogen peroxide solutions breaks down rapidly when exposed to organic material. they have been shown to be effective as an antimicrobial, but depends on concentration, contact time, temperature, pH etc. I suspect for Nosema you would need vaporized peroxide that's used to...

    Honey with ‘extras’

Total agree Eric. I think that creating a propolis extract overcomes some of the issues with contamination, but IIRC extracts are not covered under 'products of the hive' by the BBKA PIL as its a further manufacturing process. Hence my comment that I don't think hobbyists would be covered...

    Honey with ‘extras’

I did look into this a few years ago, but decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Adding anything to honey means its outside of the honey regulations in the UK, so it officially comes under food manufacturing legislation which is a lot more prescriptive to follow (i.e., more paperwork, testing and...

Going rate of Nucs and colonies this spring

Achievable price for hobbyist selling nucs depends on a number of factors. Location, colony loss over the previous winter and availability of nucs for sale in the spring. for example, spring auctions prices vary considerably based on this. Seen 6 frame nucs go for under 100 to over 250 on...
