If your temp is between 12-14°C yes.

    Positive beekeeping plans

Hopefully, I will improve honey yields as I am back to full strength this year, following 2019 losses due to CBPV, as it was so easy to sell honey at the gate last year - fingers crossed. Perhaps I may be able to sell two overwintered nucs too!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Observing, all hives and nucs flying and with 13°C forecast for tomorrow I expect a lot of activity!

    What should I have done?

I always remove syrup stores, leaving two frames, and fondant, if any, when my prunus is in flower as I know there is plenty of forage around then.

Yes, I collected some corbicular pollen and quite a bit going in the hives. Must be some flowering in a sheltered spot. Actually, must check one of my neighbour's trees.

Flowering today but the bees are huddled indoors

There is me thinking it's gorse and I hardly ever see a bee on it in my locale. Spoilt for choice.

I have a nice hazel in my garden with lots of pollen 3m from the hives that are bringing in holly pollen, but not a bee on it. The holly pollen has a lot of lipids in them though.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Time to do some detective work. Did some myself today found out that my bees are bringing in holly pollen through microscopy analysis. So I have holly berries and holly flower at the same time just like you. Haven't seen the flowers though. Must be some little pocket of warmth somewhere.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yes, maybe if she was very special in a nuc. But in this case she showed signs of failing so why stress a colony and risk disease.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not a normal thing ... Good policy to overwinter one or two nucs to replace late failed queens.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yes, with a view of breeding from her, but I would not risk a full sized colony.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    I would nuc those.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Expected activity at the hive entrance as sunny, but only 8°C. Got a bit concerned when I could only hear one colony. Had to resort to tapping and got a resounding reply. All but one hefted ok, so will apply some fondant later in the week when we expect a balmy 11°C! I would say that in...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I would not overwinter a third full season queen neither did Manley or other pros.

    Tobacco smoke

Bee Culture Quote Moses Quinby (some ancestors spelled it “Quimby,” but ancestor William Quinby emigrated to America prior to 1664 from Quinberry, England with a patent for land in Westchester County, New York) was born into a Quaker family in variously Chappaqua, New Castle or North Castle...

Good old Stan. Nice to see.

    Tobacco smoke

    That is very interesting indeed!
  19. B

    What should I have done?

Early swarming is often caused by too much of syrup winter stores left on the colony.
