sugar cost and when to buy

Yes if the area the fondant in is not too cold. I feed fondant in tubs within insulation above the crown board during winter if the colony is light.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I’m lucky regarding the sales from outside my house as I have several footpaths that converge in my road and we get a significant number of walkers passing. I also have many customers who come from the locality and father afield to pick up several jars at a time. The health food shop approached...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Sell about 1000 340g jars from outside my house, 600 340g jars via a health food shop, 600 227g jars via another couple of shops and jar another couple of thousand 227g jars for my private/corporate clients. Never needed to sell in bulk.

At least these were all in the same apiary. I’ve got another 60+ supers dotted around in another 10 apiaries.

    cut comb storage

I put my cut comb in the Thornes HC boxes with the seal in place and then put them into Ikea zip lock bags in 4’s in the freezer. I’ve never had problems with granulation or condensation yet.

    Hagens Bees

From that it would seem that Hagen bees is working with BE. So could this be just another way for Patrick to sell BE gear? 🤣 or am I being extremely cynical?

    New Information board needed?

I had 2 brand news hives suddenly appear in the paddock of a local mansion recently. I got a phone call last weekend that went something like this. “Hello, I’m a new bee beekeeper from …….. Road who is learning on the job and wondered if you had seen a swarm that I think came from my hive?” When...

    New Information board needed?

It makes me mad that they advocate letting the bees swarm when people are being quoted thousands of pounds to remove colonies from chimneys and roofs.

    Extracting National Deep Frames

I was asked by a new beek at the weekend “Will I need a shed?” To which I answered “ no, you’ll need 3 sheds!”

    Getting old

I’ve done it this year and it’s very good for nicking frames for making up nucs. For it to work really well it’s best to replace the frames removed with drawn frames.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Does it work for supers off multiple hives and how many will they clear down in 24 hrs?

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Made up some of my “butterfly” frames to use on a cut out next week. I run top and side bars down the middle glue and staple the halves together, hinge the bottom with tape and string with fishing line. When you remove a piece of comb you just lay it in one side and the close it up and hang...

    Ants and polyurethane boards.

Yes, it’s interesting. The ants seem to be mining the PU and creating a nest. I’ve yet to slice one open and see.

    Ants and polyurethane boards.

Anyone encountered this problem? I’ve never seen it before this year but it’s happened in several of my apiaries.

    Where are the wasps?

Another couple of weak colonies being attacked by wasps. Closed the entrances down to help.

    Where are the wasps?

To save a journey, Stewart the SBI went round and identified wasp. As is the way, the pestie will have been round by now, so bang goes queens for next year. Stewart is a good guy, he always inspects my colonies even though 90% of them are out of his area. I think he likes 2 days of mindless...
