    1st Sept. - 30 queen cells

I hope you get the weather you need for her to mate. Please update when you can.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Removed final cleaned up super. Fed all four - two with their own honey, two with fondant. Checked varroa trays after 24 hours. Two heavy fall >500 One >200 One <40 The two with the lowest fall both were naughty in the Summer and had brood breaks...

    Amusing questions about your bees......

The above is an indictment of our education system!!! The mind boggles!

Varroa Count - After OA treatment

What were your results Steve and how many times had you treated them? I think you and Dani may have misunderstood one another. Four treatments, five days apart should kill 95% of the mites on the bees through a brood cycle. If you still have a large drop after that you may need to further action.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Removed two cleaned up supers, added the clearer to the final hive. Vaped all four.

    Say hello to Carys

Have you checked how Carys is getting on?

    Happily queenless

It would only be a problem if the queenless nuc actually had a dud queen in it. You need to be sure it’s queenless if you unite. If you can’t be sure, shake them out.

    HELP - Hornets

Happily, so far my wasps seem particularly thick or cowardly and don’t storm the tunnels. I’m concerned though, that there will be a dearth of fruit for the wasps (it all seems early this year) and things will get more challenging through September & October.

    Wasps annoying our bees

Search the site for tunnel entrances and get some fitted asap. See Enrico’s design out of cable trunking - it makes a BIG difference. Until you fit them, reduce the entrances to a single bee space which enables the bees to defend the hive. Good luck.

    Asian Hornet

Perhaps someone’s been on holiday to France and is playing a practical joke?

    Happily queenless

You have enough space with 30 yards. You remove the hive shaken out to prevent return. The advice given by the wise old sages on here are to shake into long grass or shrubbery and basically leave them to beg their way into the other hives. I have only done this once, it was manic for a while...

    Wasp woes

Same here Jools. I fitted tunnels after I saw the defences were failing. They really made a big difference. The congestion they caused at the entrances allowed wasps to predate a few more bees, but they have so far prevented wasps “swarm feeding” inside the hives. Really sorry for you Philip, it...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That’s a lot of ivy - well ahead of it around here. You are in a lovely part of the UK, Mark, that is until Winter kicks in proper I suppose?

    That made you jump😀
  18. The Poot in Somerset

    I haven’t fed yet.

Other than extracted frames, I’ve not started yet either. I have about 20lbs of high water content honey to feed back and that will be my starter for ten from Tuesday.
