Encouraging bees to Draw out supers

Don't worry about being a greenhorn. In this game you keep learning until you're too old and knackered to carry on beeking.

How tricky is it to give up beekeeping ?

But coming back to the original post.....if you have bees in your back garden and a neighbour get stung there is a possibility that it was your bees what did it. Time for a chat with the neighbour and suggest you will move the bees far away. Maybe he says ok thanks for that, or maybe he says my...

    Honey selling

We had an inspection from the local council. We extract and jar up honey in the kitchen so nothing very elaborate. You should be able to demonstrate two sinks for washing hands and equipment and that you clean surfaces etc before jarring. We got 5 stars which was a bit of a surprise but then Mrs...

    Honey selling

Don't see why there should be any problem, provided you are buying in bulk and doing your own jar filling. You should also get a food health certificate.

    Do bees sleep at night?

As I understand the daily timetable of workers, they spend approx. one third of their time doing their chores, one third socialising and one third resting. But these are not eight hour shifts and they jump from one thing to another quite often. Is there any evidence that they carry on with this...

    newbie honey extractor quick question

I bought a 6 frame radial SAF a couple of years back and never regretted it. Well made and a good price. Motorising it at the moment and I'll have a £600 extractor for half the price. Tip: If you buy a 6 framer you can spin 2,3, 4 or 6 frames at a time because they will balance out. Very...

Would you convert a manual extractor to electric?

Just finishing converting a 6 frame radial to electric. Basically a mounting on the cross bar for a 240 v drill connected to the original drive shaft with a v belt and a couple of pulleys. Total cost c £30.00. If it works it will save a lot of elbow grease and also time because I can decap the...

Hi Ismael. Whereabouts on the S Turkey Mediterranean coast are you? I used to sail a lot in that area. Some lovely spots but really hot and dry in the Summer. Great hospitality. Great times!

    Swarm dilema

I had a swarm with nowhere to put it as all my bb's were full of other colonies and recent swarms. So I put an empty super on top of the weakest swarm and dumped the new lot in on top. New comb now nicely drawn and bias on several frames. Crude but effective.

    Foundationless super frames

Hi all. I'm thinking of trying out some super frames without foundation. Plan is a narrow strip of balsa at the top of each frame to get them going. Also alternating in the super with frames with foundation. Is this likely to work out ok?

    Smoker: Stainless Steel -v- Copper

I inherited one with a job lot of bits and pieces when I bought a couple of hives from a chap who had retired from beeking. Lovely copper job and lights well. No money but still outweighs my skills!
