    Moving hives

It's mostly smooth M4.....finishing with an incredibly bumpy track, which I will be taking extremely slowly!

    Moving hives

Thanks for all the replies. I'll go for battens underneath, hives packed tightly together and maybe some mesh vents in the crown board. I'll do a little test on some supers with the cross straps versus side by side. I can see the logic.

    Moving hives

The back of the van is enclosed (no windows) but there is access from the driver's seat. ie. the whole van is open plan.

    Moving hives

Thanks for your replies so far! (I love this forum for the quick responses). I should have mentioned that I don't actually have any travel screens and would have to make them up - so obviously preferring the less labour-intensive method..... :)

    Moving hives

Hi all I have to move my hives on Thursday evening as part of a house move: 4 x national hives and 1 x 6 frame nuc I'm moving them 170 miles (so well past the 3 mile rule!) inside a van. All the hives are on open mesh floors. The weather is obviously on the cool side. All the hives and the...

Online or book resource for forage

Hi Can anyone recommend a good online resource or book which gives thorough information on forage for honeybees. Ie. names of plants, habitats, flowering period, location, soil type etc. Thanks

Hi Thanks for the reply and advice. I'll go for this approach and will probably nadir.

    Wasp Bane

Hi Thought I get back to you having used the Wasp Bane for a few weeks. It's excellent at catching wasps. And what makes it great is that they can't get out and tell their mates about the sweet source. I can see the logic in setting it up downwind but the practicalities of moving it every...

    Freezing uncapped frames

Hi all I'm finishing off the last of my harvest. I want to leave the bees with a super of their own honey so I'm (painstakingly) shuffling and removing the odd super of capped frames to extract and whittling down to one full super for the bees, then getting the apiguard on (taking into account...

    Wasp Out

Been using one of these on a medium sized colony and seems to be working well. Can anyone say if these Wasp Outs are suitable to use on a strong colony. The bees are still pretty active in this hive, I've placed a normal Thornes block reducer in the entrance. I want to get ahead of the wasps...

    Wasp Bane

Thanks guys for all your replies. Some great advice. I'll check the Wasp Bane website now!

    Wasp Bane

Sorry, eliminate's a bit strong. Simply "discourage"; I'm trying to avoid having a serious wasp problem. At all other times of year I have no problem with wasps - I know they are important critters - but last year around late August I lost 3 hives to wasps so it's a sore point  The good...

    Wasp Bane

Hi. I've just set up my wasp bane. The guide says that it needs to be downwind of the apiary so that any wasps are trapped before they get to the apiary. It's catching some wasps but the wasps actually in the apiary are thus far ignoring it. My concern with putting it in the apiary is that...
