When you think you’ve seen it all

This got sent to mea few days ago from a friend. Love the colours, the bees wont have problems finding that. But cant help thinking it will come apart when doing manipulations. I have to put some force into mine when opening up, i hope it holds together.

    uniting a nuc

Hello all, I have a colony that has failed to thrive, still only on 3 frames of brood and now no egg being laid at all. The hive looks healthy and the bees clearly have the same opinion as me, as they have started a supercedure cell. I have a lovely queen in a nuc from a split that is going...

    Prepping for a nuc/swarm prevention.

All great suggestions thankyou so much for your thoughts. I think i will proceed with creating a nuc with the queen as i described in my original post. But i do like the idea of a possible bolstering the original hive if needed with capped brood and a reunite later in the season. I just hope it...

    Prepping for a nuc/swarm prevention.

Hi masterbeek. Yes i understand the loss of honey production, i have other hives so am not worried about that , i just thought id try a different way of swarm control this year as want to keep learning through experience. I wonder tho, taking your points into consideration, could i do it the...

    Prepping for a nuc/swarm prevention.

Hi all i hope this finds everyone safe and well during these strange times. I have one hive that has been going great guns and upon inspection today has a charged queen cell very nearly capped and a few play cups nearly beginning to look like qc. Ive always done the pagen method for swarm...

    2 hives, swarm and anaphylaxis

I agree with polyhive, you seem to be in a bit of a pickle, and if you had a true anaphalaxis reaction, its really not advisable to keep bees in your garden. Also alot of pressure for your wife to take on, you font say if she is knowledgable or has any experience with bees. Id contact your local...

    Advice on moving double broods.

Tom8400 i shut mine in for 36 hours. It showered on n off over those days but was also mild and cloudy at times. Theyve all moved well and were out orientating today as it was sunny. Id say there were at the most 20 returnees to old position but when it clouded over disappeared. I cant...

    Advice on moving double broods.

So just to let you all know, i have given up waiting for a cold snap in dorset. Still having daily temps of 8-13c and bees flying. We closed their entrances and moved them today. Popped two poles on top of hives, strapped them on as handles and off we went. All happy and quiet during the move. I...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

We had a very lucky escape with our 2 year old frenchie. She had meningitis over xmas but has been one of the rate ones to have survived. My heart goes out to anyone whose lost their dog, truly heartbraking. Today i moved 3 hives to a more secluded bit of our garden which is further away from...

    Advice on moving double broods.

Im waiting for a cold or wet snap down in dorset. The irony of waiting for bad weather in winter! Anyway we are moving our entire apiary about 40 meters over uneven ground. Im wondering the best way to do this move. I thought nailing some wooden strips to boxes and then strapping tightly to...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I finally got out to put insulation on my hives. 2 hives refused any 2:1 so have switched to fondant today, before i had chance to pop lid on they were into it. Sunny in Dorset today bees flying even though it was 5c. Now waiting for a cold spell to move apiary...

    Wax moth infestation.

Thanks ive got an old shallow saucepan from a granny that will be perfect. Lets see how many i do before giving up this has been a costly mistake and one i will learn from. Im wracking my head to remember if i cross contaminated any kit for this to have happened.

    Wax moth infestation.

Thank you everyone. If i scrap the foundation, can the frames be frozen and fumigated to save them, or is it really best to buy new and start again? You can boil them. It will get all the wax and propolis off too On the odd occasion I go mad and try to save some, it's what I do but after a few...
