Super storing and extracting honey manually..

Forgot to say i left my capped spare supers last year wrapped in greaseproof paper in the freezer until i needed them. I was lucky my chest freezer had room.

Super storing and extracting honey manually..

I did alot iof manipulating this year. Bailey comb changes snd increasing from 1 to 3 colonies. This meant only a very small amount of capped honey i was able to take off. I crushed and strained as it really didnt seem worth the amount of fuss using the extractor let only producing enough honey...

    Hornet dilemma

Our neighbour found two european hornet nests this summer, so we have had a few bothering our hives. I too was unsure so did a little reading and found there are more benefits to the enviroment than not so decided to leave them be.

    Nuc with charged QC

Yeh im in dorset. It was 21c today. No harm in looking through i believe. The last time i left a qc, half the hive buggered off. Plus i havent seen a drone in any of my hives for weeks so not chancing it. The ivy is just starting. Its warm. I went in and out very quickly. I dont see the issue.

Thats an interesting thought swarm. It was a crazy year weather wise and i did have exactly that going on in my hives.

    Ivy flow has started..

Our ivy is barely out yet on last dog walk but they must be on some somewhere as theyre very busy. Still taking syrup down so possibly a bit behind you curly. Ours are all battened down just need to remove apiguard next week, check on my nuc and thatll be it till trickle time. Im glad mine are...

What's expected at this time of year?

Im sure i read somewhere. If you can lift one dide with one finger=starvation If you csn lift one side with two fingers=need feeding. If you can only barely lift with three fingers=all good. Well i cant lift my bb atm with both hands, theyre still taking syrup down so fingers crossed theyre...

    Nuc with charged QC

I agree there is no reason to supersede a young just mated well bred laying queen just bought. None of my hives have a single drone in them. Really think the mid apiguard treatment messed with their senses.

    Nuc with charged QC

This was a new qc. I went through and checked before introducing my new queen. Of course it was opened up. Complete new queen white but fully formed in lots of royal jelly. Thanks swarm if weather permits i shall check once more. Agreed im not losing a second new queen if i can help it.

Thanks all. I am glad ive done the right thing. I dont really want to open them up again but if weather permits should i?

    Nuc with charged QC

Hi all im hoping ive done the right thing. I have a nuc that lost its queen due to my negligence early august. I requeened with a queen from a reputable uk breeder. She was accepted and have since largely left them alone for the wueen to get laying, apart from feeding. They have also been...

    What’s Happened ?

Silly question but are you absolutely positive they are all queenless. Do you have links with any associations or other beekeepers. You need some frames of eggs to double check and if so some new queens. It seems highly unusual for all three to become queenless at the same time.

    Thymol feeding question.

Im aware of fermentation reason but have read it can help with wax moth. I also thought a profolactic use if stored in cells overwinter would help with nosema. So thankyou for the advice. As i understand it its all winter prep feeds. I knew it was not for varroa but understand those points might...

    Thymol feeding question.

Apologies if my 1st post concerning this topic turns up again, but i understand the site is having issues and my original post has disappeared. I have now finished my apiguard treatments and am feeding for winter. I have noticed one or two moth larvae on my inspection board so want to use some...
