The Greatest Generation - Winter bees

Maintaining the 4 basic principles seems sage advice with the aim to have good amount of healthy winter bees before winter sets in.

    Buying a table saw

The cheap table saw have three main problems IMO 1) The tables are made of bolted together pressed steel and are not flat 2) The fence only has a lock at one end and can bend with heavier work pieces. 3) the blade spindle bearings or bushes wear quite quickly and the blade then develops a wobble...

Price of honey jars - up , up , up

Indeed we were warned but I was hoping for 20% at worst. Oh well.

    Government Response to Petition

"The Government disputes assertions that honey imports to the UK are being adulterated on an industrial scale. Allegations in the media that a small number of specific blended honeys sold in the UK were fraudulent have been fully investigated by the relevant Local Authorities and concluded that...

Price of honey jars - up , up , up

Just received the new price list from our usual club supplier (Rawlings/ Compak) and nearly fainted. Last year prices were up 5% and we were told to expect further increases. But the price for 12oz Hex jar is up a further 43% to 47.6p per jar & lid, delivered. The membership won't be...

Scientists discover that bees keep healthier when kept warm

Perhaps they are acclimatised and the cold stress is relative to the ambient temp to some degree.

    Sales irritations

SWMBO is delighted with my beekeeping - its the first hobby of mine which has the potential to make money or at least break even - and after the initial investment is heading in the right direction.

    Masks/filters for oxalic

My understanding is that mites have sticky feet (made wet from haemolymph) to attach to the bees. So there is a path for the OA to reach the mites' internal organs via their feet. Bees, instead, use hooks to attach to things. OA entering via the bee's alimentary tract can be metabolised to some...

    Vaping newbie

Thanks - however it doesn't offer much/any info about OA affects mites but not honey bees. The wet/sticky mite feet seems a plausible route of OA entry - as described earlier.

Simon the beekeeper closing down sale

A great shame. I got most of my supplies from StB - only 20 minutes drive away, so I would collect from their premises when Aldi shopping in Nuneaton. Not sure who I will go to next .

    Vaping newbie

Thanks for the replies. I asked the question at a recent club meeting and nobody knew the answer. Also the syllabus for the BBKA Bee Health module does not mention mechanism of action nor did any of the books I read in preparation. I dont know if eucalyptus does kill mites but its one of the 4...

    Vaping newbie

What is the mechanism of action of oxalic acid as an effective varroa treatment ? And whilst I'm thinking about it how does formic acid (in a similar way to OA I presume) and eucalyptus work ?

    Wax filtering.

I have been very impressed with these biodegradeable nappy liners https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0010X3DYQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

    Thornes cabinet thermostat alternatives

I salvaged an unwanted chest freezer (which still worked, amazingly) and converted it to a freezer / warmer. It uses a XH-W3001 temperature controller for both the freezing boxes /frames and warming honey - depending upon what I plug in. https://bit.ly/3VORh3Z I installed two STC1000 controllers...

Vaping from above / through the crownboard

I've a "winter" honey super directly under the crown board. The CB has a beespace above the super's frames. I could just vape through the CB feed hole with a "box" to enclose the vapouriser over the feed hole (as suggested above), but would it be better to remove the CB and inset an eke for...

Vaping from above / through the crownboard

Roughly how large is your "vaping" box ? Trying to vap from below on WBC hives is near impossible.

    Acetic cid for wax moth

I tried acetic acid as per recommendations and found it partially successful - in that only a few frames had WML in the spring and those tended to be ones that had had brood/pollen in at some time in the past. This year I acquired an old chest freezer (FOC) and have placed all the honey supers...
