Why are Nationals so popular? (and other advice appreciated)

As an aside, just what is the advantage of TBS - as mentioned in this thread?

Drill adapter to threaded plasters paddle

I use this spiral mixer - attached straight into the chuck of a cheap cordless drill (which is dedicated to soft set honey mixing).

    Gasvap alternative

I was thinking of getting a gasvap but having read the comments I'll stick with my £25 12v sublimator from StBK (as was) for the time being.

    Feeding with Apiguard?

Im not sure what the issue is with feeding during Apiguard treatment. Apiguard is thymol gel and beeks put thymol in syrup to stop it going mouldy when giving winter feed. Sure, don't treat whilst supers with honey for human consumption are in situ. But I dont see why you cant feed with...

bucket of soft set, what to do

Out of interest was your soft set from runny honey that you seeded or from OSR honey ? I make all my soft set from OSR and have never needed to seed it but you most stir regularly as it sets to obtain a smooth texture and prevent it going absolutely solid. I invested in a "corkscrew stirrer and...

    Summer harvest?

Ive finally given up waiting for better weather and extracted what I could. 17.5% water. Summer honey harvest 30% down on last year. Left them each with a partially filled "winter" super to fill over the remaining weeks whilst I start varroa treatment .

    Oz armour?

Oz Armour +++++ I recently bought a cheap ventilated suit from Amazon but sent it back as the sizing was ridiculous - 2XL according to their sizing chart - arms and legs were way too long but with such a short body that it was too tight in the crutch. I cant imagine who it would have fitted -...

    BBKA Basic exam

I took the BASIC in 2019. I found it a useful exercise in incentivising myself to read widely and give myself a good overall grounding in apiculture. Ive taken lots of test/exams during my working lifetime. Compared to those the BASIC was quite fun - failing would have had no great...

    Formic Acid- Should I Treat?

How do you go about vaping from the top? With WBC hives its awkward to get a heater into the hive without hitting the frames. I made a small box to sit over the CB feeder hole and vape via that.

    Formic Acid- Should I Treat?

At the moment MAQS and Formic Pro is pretty much out of stock across the UK from what people on here are saying. FWIW Im going with Apiguard this year - after finding 2 years of MAQS too stressful for me and my bees. On the other hand Im impressed with OA vaping.

    Randy Oliver OA sponges

In Critical Care and Anaesthetics we used a few drugs that were "off licence" ie being used in a way not covered by the current licence. The off-licence use was supported with clinical evidence but a new licence would be very unlikely to be obtained because these were often "old" cheaper drugs...

    Extractor wobble

Indeed, nearly everyone has a simple idea what centrifugal force is; which works fine in day to day practical terms. But the scientific reality is rather different and more complicated. A bit like "how does a bicycle turn" ? Its not what most people think. Back to extractors - what about fixing...

    Formic Acid shelf life

My understanding is that that UK licence does not allow for supers being left on during Formic Pro treatment, whereas they can be left on in USA and Canada.
