    Snelgrove variant

Snelgrove is a bit like Demaree in the sense that the boxes are stacked and the processes rely, in part, on pheromone transfer. However Demaree is preventative swarm measure where as Snelgrove is used for actual AS so Demaree is not suitable for my objective in this case. Sent from my...

    Snelgrove variant

Ive got a WBC that needs an AS. Due to gear and space, I wondered if I can use a Snelgrove but put the SB on another National colony that sits next to the WBC? The National is a mated queen hive from another split and could use flying bees to bolster it. I can manipulate the use of the WBC to...

Mated Queen Introduction after an AS

If I have performed an AS where flying bees and brood are still together eg NUC split, how soon after the queen has gone can you introduce a new caged queen to the original colony? The fondant plug releases in about 3 days, can I add the new queen straight away?

    New use for air freshener

Ive used Glade for similar use. But I have a nasty hive again this year. They went for my left glove and stung the area multiple times -didnt get through to flesh though. I thought I would get rid of the alarm pheromone and squirted my Glade on my glove. Result, even worse. Put my glove on the...

    Supercedure?

Many thanks. I will consider swarm risk. Queen is clipped. Think I will check in 4 days and look for more QCs...If spotted then I'll hoik her out on a NUC split. Would anyone recommend a Demaree for this situation? Have become a fan because of its inherent control value.

    Supercedure?

Strong 2 xBB / 2 supers had 5 or 6 QCs. Couldn't find green queen so removed all but one big fat cell (possibly biggest Ive seen) which was all in its own hanging on a bare frame (just wax) and a wee bit of a honey, quite a lovely sight actually. Gave it 3 days and then tried to tried to find...

    Macdee’s Demaree

Is there anything you need to think about if you are performing on an existing double BB? I have performed on one with success but lost the other second....I have figured out because the choice on the second was too late. Both were double BBs that I thought would have adequate space.

AS - after no find the queen

    1. Agree shes probably in Trump Tower rather than the newly formed Nelson Mandela House.. I had to move the split foragers box plus supers to the out apiary as they got proper spiteful. I'll check in there tomorrow and have a look at what happen to the eggs / OB frames. 2. They had not gone as...

AS - after no find the queen

Thank you sir. You have answered the key question about the remaining QC. If they make more on the original site, I will at least know the queen is not there. Back to the brood on the new site. If the queen is there ( the likely scenario) I will now see the build up of flyers as young bees...

AS - after no find the queen

A 2 x BB, 2 x Super, was inspected today and I found 4 charged QCs hanging off the bottom of frames from the top BB... I immediately searched for HM but after 2 complete run through of 20 frames I was unable to find her. I placed two eggs/brood frames in a new box on the original site, replaced...

Using Poly Hives during high season

Hi - I have a bursting-with-bees 11 frame (full size) DN4 Paynes which has overwintered splendidly. But I only have one and with plenty of standard National boxes and supers in storage and ready for us I wondered should i keep the Paynes poly running or switch over now we are getting into the...

    Double Brood

What would folks suggest if you were adding alot of fresh foundation? In my 6th year I have more combed frames but many newbies will be adding BB2 with only FF available. ... Does it make sense to add some of the working brood frames to BB2 and intersperse FF into the spaces in BB1? Or just...
