Expanding colonies ready for additional box, and then the weather....

I'm in West London, current temperature is 14 deg C. I was about to add a second BB to 3 x singles that have brood in 7+ frames....All with (predominantly) drawn comb....I was going to add BB above the others and limit temperature risks to brood given its still not warm. Like the rest of the...

    Queenless possibility

Hi all May I say best wishes to fellow beekeepers, beginners and old hands alike for the new working season and a wonderful spring. We've certainly got off to a cracker weather wise. My first inspection has seen 13 of my 14 all looking pretty good after winter. However! One of the most...

    Beginners Beekeeping Book?

Hi all I'm 8 years in as a beek. I've been asked by a couple of my friends in the past few months about them starting the hobby. Only thing is I didn't learn from a book. I did refer to a few, as well as Youtube and websites. Mainly Ive learned from this very forum! Does anyone recommend a...

    Moving hives in winter

I am due to move 8 hives of various weights (5 healthy colonised nationals, 3 poly NUCs) from one site to another, distance 2 miles, travel time, 15 mins-ish. Given it will be chilly, are there special instructions in relation to the bees' clustering? They'll be disturbed with the physical...

    Caught short with queen cells

Did a solid inspection today before going away camping for the weekend... My only brood and a half (outlier) had a couple of charged QCs....i had no kit for AS of any kind so left one QC and caged HM in one of those yellow transport jobs... It feels OK to leave her until Tuesday when i can get...

    more demaree help pls (apols)

Odd indeed. Of my 3 Demerees, I had QCs in 2 and clipped queen swarms so no loss of bees I can see. One, I lost the VQ somehow... The other one I still have the queen in the LBB but has gone right off lay...only 3 frames of brood in 10 days. I can only believe this weather is affecting...

    Acetic Acid Treatment

Proud to have seen this post develop to probably the most informative detail on this subject on the web. Mainly thanks to Baz...Cheers sir! And everyone else... If acetic acid treatment was more popular this would deserve a sticky. Way better informed on this now...

    Acetic Acid Treatment

Its odd...all the UK based Acetic acid sterilisation instructions make no mention of assuring a good ambient temperature for effective evaporation.

    Acetic Acid Treatment

cheers Drex...I can see them. Not too expensive. Just put inside an empty brood on top. Does a signal "burn" sterilise against nosema spores? None of this waiting a week business?

    Acetic Acid Treatment

Cheers chaps...So I would have the same set up? Can you instruct me what to get and how to handle? Assume I'm dumb with sulphur bombs which is probably the safest position to be.

    Acetic Acid Treatment

I piled 3 columns of brood boxes, 4 high boxes on each and sealed them. Left in the garage with 500ml of 80% acetic acid on top of each, in turn, in reasonably wide ceramic bowls. The garage is not heated so I put two electric filament heaters on full time but with this cold weather im not...

    Rolling Demaree....

Bees are quickly back filling empty brood combs with honey. If I put these down below with the queen during the "roll" will they take the honey upstairs and will they be more likely to target the 'mid floor' supers if the top brood is now again fitted with new brood frames post-roll? I dont...

    Swarm, no brood, virgin, wha'?

Cheers all...Anti's question does still leave one last head scratch because there was only two opened cups (and one could have been a play) I could see, right on the edges tucked under the "margin" of the lower frame bar. Not the more numerous and more 'frame based' cells you see on a...

    Swarm, no brood, virgin, wha'?

So my test frame had 6 qcs on it within 24 hours...so ive added a caged mated queen. So they swarmed with no queen left or maybe they attempted a swarm and somehow the clipped queen came back, they casted and she perished? Another one for experience.

Demaree - drones down south so tempted to do one

West London here. My one I hastily did 3 weeks or so ago worked like a charm. Ive done another 2.and have my eye on another 2 in a couple of weeks. Ive added my drone-release boards as per Emyr's suggestions. Already taken some lovely QCs for increase...

    Swarm, no brood, virgin, wha'?

I searched the captured swarm and sure enough saw the VQ... I reckon you might be right about the original hive. The blue queen has probably just gone right off lay on swarm issue rules. I was thinking to look again more carefully. If I find her, remove her and put her in a NUC. I don't expect...

    Swarm, no brood, virgin, wha'?

Thanks Murox for getting back on topic. Seems there is a missing clue in this. I'll check the swarm today and see if I can see a queen. I think ill get a frame of eggs in the original also and see if they start to make an emergency QC. I suppose a question to experts might be have they ever...

    Swarm, no brood, virgin, wha'?

They overnighted on the camellia, that's not a virgin flight!
