    Honey price this year

My wife ended up selling a lot of mine by post and got very good prices. So its not all about location. £10 per 400g £15 per 400g chunk, £40 per frame of cut. I never seemed to struggle to sell my honey. I used the cheapest jars and cra**y labels I printed in black and white, then stuck on...

    Crazy Bees

It can be very hard to find a q in a hive of angry bees, so I understand your predicament. You have 2 hives right. If you suspect one is hopelessly queenless, you could pop a frame of eggs in from the other and see what happens. Easier to observe a single frame, then strip down a whole box of...

    Bees in a roller

Good work, I think I would have gone angle grinder and crow bar. Perhaps you should block any holes in case more decide to take up residence. Yes, bee hovers are different internally, a normal hover with a bag would likely harm the bees.

    Forum Poll

There are some advantages to collectively promoting a single way, but I just feel it is a shame other viable approaches don't get a mention. I am wary to specify exactly what approaches I refer too for fear of sparking a "debate". But in light of your comment I would like to make clear that I...

    Forum Poll

Well I have to say my bit. I joined this forum as a complete noob. I had no bee keeping experience and a box of bees in the garden. Unfortunately after 3 very successful seasons the kids took garden priority, so the bees had to go - for now. But background aside, I dont think anyone was ever...

Honey Wanted Bucket of honey wanted - as close to Southampton as possible.

We use honey at my work for feeding insect cultures. For years we have used ASDAs cheapest cr^p. But my work is having a crazy pro environment push, and are trying to cut back on waste and source more things locally. I have been asked to try source some local honey. A 10L bucket would be ideal...

    Plans for planting

I am sure it would, a normal cutting would probably work too if you pick a nice shoot. I am not familiar with Wollemi Pine, but some pines grow with branches that get close too, or touch the ground, If that's the case with your pine you can just pin down and bury a branch. But give it a go...

    Plans for planting

I know Mum did a flying cutting on the Acer tree the 2nd time, not sure about the 1st time though. A flying cutting is when you cut part way through a branch, then you get a little bag of damp soil and tie it where the cut is (mum uses cling film). This way the cutting is still fed from the tree...

    Plans for planting

Very easy. My mum got me started on cuttings. When I was little I remember her tacking all sorts of cuttings, often from peoples front gardens, sometimes without permission, if it hung over a fence she considered it fair game! If she saw anything she liked she would take a cutting and have a...

    Plans for planting

Started my chilly on Friday. I have Cyanes, Orange-Habanero, Hot Thai, and some big light green ones that I dont know the name of. 10 seeds per pot. I am spoiled rotten and have access to some useful facilities at work. So I start my seedling in a environmentally controlled room set to 20c and...

    Fermented honey

I had 3 customers ask for propolis as they had heard of its health benefits. So I would just scrape off any big lumps that looked nice and pop them in a little tub. I found 2nd year mainly frames are the best source. I just gave my propolis away, but never had much and the few people that...

    Fermented honey

I read that sometimes honey can still sometimes ferment on rare if <20%. Apparently it also depends on the type of honey the storage conditions and what types of yeast are present in the honey. So the whole 20% thing is not a 100% guarantee your honey. Regarding your frames Fizzle, personally...

Latest snake-oil varroa treatment pretending not to be a varroa treatment

I think there is a good chance that the creator of the "Hive Cleaning" product may have good intentions. Perhaps they have produced and used them with great success and hope to make a few £s selling their creation. Obviously there are certain regulatory factors to consider if one were to sell a...

    Plans for planting

Yes, but have always found them to be a roll of the dice. I usually start them in a greenhouse, then transplant out to a sunny spot. I get about 7 little corns from a good plant on a good year, but sometimes just get 1 or 2 or even nothing from a plant.

OMG I should have thought of this

So for £17.99 I can save 100 bees in my hive, there are 1000s of bees in a hive. So to save the bees in 1 hive from veroha I am going to need a lot of WristBees. So I just dont think they would be cost effective compared to other treatments. Maybe someone could work out a way to modify one, so...

    Locking up bees for wintee!!

Never by me. I remember when you helped me work out why my bees were all over my lawn. Their water trays were dry. Thanks again.

    Locking up bees for wintee!!

Well said, I watch Ian primarily for entertainment. And just happened to learn some things that I can use in my climate. I like watching Thai bee keeping (and ant keeping!) videos too.
