Known as Arbroath Smokies. Absolutely lovely for breakfast.

    Double (national) brood vs. 14x12

I don't suppose really it matters that much, just realise that once you've chosen a "type" then it will be a royal pain in the ar5e to swap things around. I went with 14x12 because I thought rightly or wrongly the size would allow for a few mistakes and I wouldn't be instantly punished with...

    First inspection of the year.

Try and get another Hive / Nuc once they are available, then if you bugger up one Hive the other will help you get out of the mess.

    Best place to get stung?

I think @Finman is right, a sting on the crown of my head was pretty painless. The one the other week on the cheek bone just below the eye was not great, the day after I had a egg on my face for about 4 days. Finger stings seem to itch and itch and itch.

Are you thinking of joining octopus for electricity?

Last week I took out my Nest thermostat and installed a Tado controller and their thermostatic radiator valves. They allow you to set a temperature for each radiator / room. So in a traditional system all radiators are on or off, with this you can set individual temperatures to all each room...

Cost of beekeeping and poly nucs

I've just bought 2x 14x12 wooden Nuc boxes, a couple of floors and x4 supers. Didn't get enough change for a curry out of £900.00. But it keeps me out of mischief, so the cost is priceless. It costs me more because I buy ready assembled, I can't knock a nail in straight to save my life.

    Plans for planting

Thats the exact system I follow. Covered a large area of ground with cardboard then a couple of inches of compost, and just keep adding a few centimetres each winter. The no dig beds are light and airy to walk on compared to how the ground used to be. Holds water far better in hot weather to. I...

Do wild colonies swarm themselves to death?

There's a bloke in my local association, he doesn't treat for Varroa, carry out any inspections, manage queens in any way. He basically puts supers on and takes them off again, that's it. He has around 200 hives and produces a huge amount of honey. I've not seen it for myself but that's what he...

    Plans for planting

I think give it another week or so and I'll start off some seeds in plugs, indoors to germinate, then out into the greenhouse. I buy the compost pellets that you rehydrate. So with Beetroot, get a tray of empty modules, soak some compost pellets. Make a small hole in the centre and drop in x4...

    Beesuits for Kids

We like many people above purchased from Simon the Beekeeper. My 5 year old and 2 year old both have suits that fit well. The starter kit is good value with leather gauntlet gloves, smoker, bee brush and small hive tool, it just helps them copy and feel involved. Obviously we don't light the...

    Queen failure spring plan

As a beginner you have to shut that voice up in your head that keeps suggesting "have a little look". This is my first winter, 2 hives on 14x12 in Derbyshire. One hive has capping of food and brood on the floor suggesting bee's over 4 frames, One has very little. I can see that both hives are...

In what way do they differ Oliver? It’s my first winter!!

Best time to vape bees in the UK

I did mine 10 days before the shortest day, one hive dropped loads and the other hardly any. Now starting to see tiny bits of wax on the floor board, so either they are munching loads of stores or starting to lay brood.

    Beginners Beekeeping Book?

As a lovely Christmas present try Collins Beekeepers Bible. Not as in-depth as the Haynes book, but one far more likely to be of interest and read, if they then wish to get Bee's or take up the hobby they can get the other books.

    Cleaning honey extractors

You can either clean or sanitise, cleaning is better. When sanitising you remove all the germs / organisms both good and bad that are living on any surface, be that kitchen units, hands, honey extractor, toilet seat etc etc. To live and multiply, like us they need air, food and moisture...

    Newbie from Southampton

He also shows when things go wrong and mistakes made, unlike most YouTube videos which shows beekeeping as all sunny uplands and meadows. I enjoy watching his videos and can learn a lot, for a beginner its worth subscribing to his Patreon page.

Are you thinking of joining octopus for electricity?

I've always used Certainly Wood for my logs, get them in the summer when they are very slightly cheaper... I need to buy a mixed woodland!
