    Are you still inspecting? November?

Not been anywhere near them since honey came off and strips went on. By the time September comes around, I'm not sure who's most sick of the sight of who, them of me or me of them. Which reminds me, I've got to take the strips off at the weekend, but it's not long until I give them a trickle of...

God I love growing our own

Very nice chillies, I’ve done mostly paprika chillies this year, smoked them in the bbq and ground them into a powder, very nice. I think I got more chillies than tomatoes which have been very poor, and the cucumbers which I pulled up in August without getting any fruit at all. It’s been a...

    Do you use Queen excluders

This year is the first year I've not used QX on any hives. Not a noticeable difference, apart from I did have a swarm and found a solitary open QC in the second super above the BB. No other brood around it, so I think it was just one of those things Bee's do. Are the Bee's any happier who knows...

Virgin queens. Whats the best simple method to get them mated.

I light a few candles, and play some Barry White just near the hive. Works every time.

God I love growing our own

Over the past few weeks I've been thinking that my cucumber's aren't doing great and looking as they should. Turns out I must of miss labeled them when planting the seeds as now they've grown on, my cucumbers are 100% courgettes.

Advice on a single sealed QC discovery

This is what i do for checking on varroa , photo 1 side of 2 frames in 2 hives gives a general idea and i can zoom in and get a clear view whilst drinking tea.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Blimey. Okay back and split them tomorrow? Or maybe the horse has bolted. They was all looking not far off emerging and that was Tuesday. I can put some frames in a mini Nuc? Is that what you would do?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Last inspected about 2 weeks ago, last weekend was very cold and wet so left them alone. Out of 3 hives the one that was QR but a bit uppity has now got 4 supercedure QC's and had a couple of swarm cells just starting which I removed, add a super and let them get on with the supercedure. Of the...

    Propolis needed

I get the propolis and warm it in olive oil, then strain it roughly, just to remove the big bits of rubbish, in around 50-100ml of oil. Then I melt a tub of raw shea butter that you can buy from Amazon a brand called Soapery. Mix the oil and melted butter and pour it back into the tub the Shea...

    Propolis needed

Wondered if anyone has any Propolis for sale, I don’t have any left and use it mixed with Shea butter for my kids eczema. Just thought it would be worth asking. Thank You .

Time to get the camera out againAnd spread some joy

Slightly off topic, but hope it brings a smile to peoples faces, I bought a selection of old hats from EBay. Probably the best of a bad bunch… none fit! They are really for the kids dressing up… I am thinking I could attach a bit of netting and make a veil.

    First inspection?

Thank you for the great advice Eric, I'll definitely try this.

    First inspection?

I've been thinking about not feeding now and looking at the weather. They've eaten the fondant I put on in February, and if I put anymore on and it leaves no room for egg laying then they will potentially swarm earlier. From hefting, which I'm still rubbish at as only my 3rd winter, I think I'm...

Sulphur Discs from Thornes ? needed?

I've seen a e-shot from Thorne saying that sulphur discs are back in stock, I've never used them before or needed to. Last year I lent one of my hives for queen rearing and when it came back it was full of wax moth. I've not really done anything with it over winter. A couple of years ago I'd...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had a quick lift of the roofs and decided with the weather looking a bit colder, decided to put a small fondant block on 2 of the Hives. Whip em off and put 'em on 30 second job. Lifted the empty container off and up they came, legged it back to the house to get a smock on, went back and both...

God I love growing our own

I spend about £8 on enough onion sets to last us as a family of 4 an entire year. Put them in the unheated greenhouse for about 6 weeks then gently replant them into the bed where they will grow until they are harvested in August / September. One that's great is putting 8 / 10 White Lisbon...
