sugar cost and when to buy

It's certainly down to your bees, keep bees who are sensible and always maintain some stores around the brood nest ;)

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

They clear out of top and bottom. You can make one stack of supers from different hives with a clearer board above and below, obviously make sure there are no holes or gaps.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Do it in winter, it's much easier in cold weather ;)

Not a record to be pleased about :(

I don't think any particular 'type' of beekeeper are at fault, in most cases it's just bad luck and something that could happen to any of us.

    Weird sting reaction

Stung on the ear and a while later had the SBI turn up to wind up every colony by clattering through them and I took a battering to my hands. Reaction to the sting sites wasn't that bad but my ear swelled and raised welts on my neck, I also had a rash appear around my armpits and crotch.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I know how you feel and another load next week before it's finished, plus a million and one other chores going on in the background!!!

    Super above or below?

You can leave it all winter and remove in the spring, it won't hurt.

VIDEO Unique Insect: The Maltese Honey Bee

Malta needs to follow the example of Slovenia, unless others are banned, this unique sub species will be lost.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went to the Speedway Grand Prix yesterday so left collecting the supers until today. Not a single bee left in the supers which was nice and had a hand from my very organised wife which made things much easier. I'll get the rest in next week.

    Mini mating nuc next step

Give the comb a slight shake and dislodge any older bees, young nurse bees hold on tighter, they should be ok. If you take brood from multiple hives, shake all the bees off the combs into an empty box, the older bees will take to the wing, then tip them in the nuc and they will reoccupy the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Start of the honey pull, first clearer boards went out today.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

With plastic foundation you could probably get away with scraping back to the plastic. They are generally more of a concern in stored combs and can make an awful mess so be especially careful with any comb that has contained brood or pollen. If you have poly boxes, they will tunnel through the...

    Mini mating nuc next step

Don't forget to add the bees as well as the brood if her colony is small, they will need nurse bees to look after that extra brood.

    Boxy Bees and Apimanager records

A lot to be said for staying 'old school', what with updates and abandonware, there is so much recorded data to be potentially lost.

    Partially capped honey frames

It's always the same Nick, you have to call time at some point in order to get effective treatments done. Then there's ivy, I have seen some that's very advanced this year.
