Seeing as I am out of honey atm and have both jar sizes, I think I will give 12oz a try at the same price I charged last year for 1lb and see how it goes. Does anyone have an opinion on how popular chunk honey is? Is it worth making some up or just stick with runny and cut comb as separate...

I don't really see an issue with a 1lb jar as opposed to a 12oz jar, price point is the issue not the volume the product is sold. I currently have both sizes and have not decided which size to stick with but do not intend to do both indefinitely. I am currently favouring 12oz size. I accept...

    Maisemore sale

No I haven't...and I have forgotten my log in details so cant even track it (will probably ring them). They have taken the money though if that is any indication. I am out of supers now so am waiting on it now.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Quite nice out today, a little dark cloud but other than that nice, so decided to inspect the home apiary. One hive calm, only used a bit of smoke to prevent crushing when closing up. One cup (uncharged), nest on 9 frames. Added a 3rd super as other two filling well and well populated with...

    Painting a bee hive

I have made my own nucs and found that edpm makes a good roof covering. Not sure how cost effective it is compared to what others are using but it was left over from doing my shed. So far so good.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thanks for the feedback. I do think that on balance they are at low risk of swarming which is partly why I am holding back, so as not to annoy for no reason. I have already split a couple of them this year and have found previously that does the job (although is no guarantee I accept), another...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I found I had a bad tempered hive a few weeks ago - shortly before a thunder storm - but at the time of inspection weather was 'fine'. They were in a similar mood to how you describe which is maybe why I am being a little cautious. I am getting dangerously close to 'day 9' so am keen to get...

    Painting a bee hive

Thank you both E&M and Jenkinsbrynmir. I was erring on your approach JBM (I think that what people abbreviate you too) as when I think about it, I block one crownboard vent with a bit of wood and in winter cover the other with a tub of fondant anyway! Sometimes, just saying it out load (so to...

    Painting a bee hive

Do you make cut outs for the roof vents or just cover them? To date i have not put insulation in but was wondering if people do keep vents clear or not as I am partly concerned about condensation. I do have some insulation knocking around which would be good to use i think.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Was quite windy both Saturday and Sunday so couldn't inspect. Am I being too cautious? The rain wasn't too bad but the hives are fairly exposed so thought it best to leave it until the wind dies down.

    Maisemore sale

I have tried to be restrained (read as' will have to buy more before this time next year') - I did only spend £200 so think I did ok...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Mainly looking at the maisemore sale and trying to decide if i should try a couple of double brood box next season or 14 x 12 (for compatibility / ease of splitting i am currently erring on double BB ). Then the internal debate of how many hives do i need next year and it is worth buys some...

    Not mixing supers

I guess volume could affect that approach. I will keep to extracting each apiary separately but to break down to the super seems quite a faff / equipment heavy? How do you find it practically? Do you clean down the extractor each time too or are you happy with a little carry over?

Upon reflection, that was my thought too, hence abandoning that approach and doing it as I have previously.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

A very good question. One that I asked the guy that suggested it - then instantly regretted it and let them out. I should have asked that very question before I just did it but I have not introduced a mated queen before (previously I just raise via nuc) and just accepted the process as explained...

Buoyant roadside honey sales since lockdown

Price is such a difficult subject for some I think. I know a number of the members here are running a business but for some it is a small scale hobby or a sideline at best and as such maybe business acumen and profit are not the most important / thought about factors and so are maybe led by...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

After my inspection at the weekend found that one of my nucs was very full (all frames full of BIAS) I decided today to upgrade them into a full size hive. Signs are positive at the moment as they were very good tempered, I has expected a bit more aggression with all the switching around - but...
