    Filtering wax

Do you know if nappy filters give a finer filtering than J cloths?

Sole trader, Limited Company or what?

Ok, thanks. I often fill in a self assessment for claiming back tax for business miles (wont be for this FY though!), so it looks like it may take me longer that normal to fill out the form !

Sole trader, Limited Company or what?

Thanks Boston. Does that mean I can be PAYE and self employed? Seems odd, but guess that's how it works?

Sole trader, Limited Company or what?

@colinlyne - From my below post, maybe you will understand how even a small hobbyist needs to understand the tax implications! This thread has turned into a very useful one for me. As I am such small fry I hadn't considered that I was near to having to pay tax. I took honey off mainly two hives...

    Tesco’s Honey

Personally I would separate them. I have an apiary in the village and one in a more urban environment. I give separate names as I know the people that buy in the village really want it due to the local nature of it.

How much to sell nucs for

I don't disagree. I outlined my current thinking (I do still consider myself new - even newer to selling nucs as i am trying to expand still), however I am very much open to change and have adapted quite a lot due to this forum. Will nuc selling price be the next thing I review? Probably. Will I...

Fair enough, maybe I should just charge more!

How much to sell nucs for

Ok Eric, to clarify a bit then. If it were a stranger / random buying a nuc off me I consider it a business transaction and would sell at a higher price (around £150), if i were selling to a fellow association member it would be on similar terms that were afforded to me. It is also worth...

How much to sell nucs for

That looks around the same as I had calculated in the past so pleased that the our numbers are in line, however I factor in providing a nuc box so would consider going up a little. As a hobbyist, charge would be based on a number of factors though (i.e. my association members would be charged...

How much to sell nucs for

Mine sells for £50 after doing the free beginners course. The deal is £10 down, then the nuc is kept on their site for the season and the beginners get mentored through their first year. At the end of the season if they want to stick with beekeeping they pay the remaining £40 and take their...

    Mrs Bs Bees

Maybe, I honestly have no idea. They asked for a price, I gave a price, they agreed. The location of the shop (i.e. local to the honey) may be a big factor. Sells well mind, I sold all my honey by December - not that I am a big producer so its probably a small throughput of sales through the...

    Mrs Bs Bees

Most of my honey gets sold to a shop and I get more than £5/lb for it. Due to recommendations here I changed by jar size and don't regret it for a second (well apart from now being stuck with a box of 1lb jars doing nothing in my store!).

    Positive beekeeping plans

I know! I will be surprised if i don't out grow it this season (its not even built yet). :laughing-smiley-014

    Positive beekeeping plans

I am looking to double up on my five hives. On current plans I have 'future proofed' my kit for a couple of years so hopefully only need to buy a bit of foundation next year - if I am off and need more supers all the better. My 'little hobby' is turning a bit into a sideline, I am in the...

    Small-scale and large-scale beekeeping - what's the difference?

I have a similar theory for my office based job, I call it 'manage the manager'. If my manager is happy with my output then I am doing enough, everything else I do is to make my work life easier.

    Foundation cost comparison

Very handy. I came here to ask about foundation prices as i need to buy some ready for the new season!

    Bakers’ fondant

I do not recall ever seeing fondant in there tbh

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hefted my two garden hives. They were 'two fingers' I have had some fondant on them for a week but it hardly looked touched. Not too concerned, they are not 'light' but they certainly need a bit more to get them through, just keep on the watching brief ( which i would do regardless tbh). Not...
