    Eke - building and using

I tried making an eke once. It's easy for those who can.

    Oh, bother

My bee buddy reported in. The brood is worker brood. So all is well.

    Oh, bother

I suspect they didn't want to leave the queen. I'll be away for the next inspection. I'm looking forward to getting a message from my bee buddy telling me whether there is any sealed worker brood in the brood box.

    Oh, bother

Interesting point. Nothing capped as of two days ago.

    Oh, bother

We inspected today. The immediate good news was that there was a small patch of eggs in the uppermost of the supers left on, reassuring up us that when clearing the supers we took we did not damage or lose the queen. The next super down had no sign of eggs or brood. The super immediately above...

Hi I live in Brittany France.

Ivy honey resemble manuka in that both taste foul.

    Oh, bother

One hive had six supers on. All but the lowest were full, but only the top three fully capped, so we put a clearer board under them on Thursday, and took them off yesterday. The clearer board hadn't worked well, so we had a lot of smoking, shaking and brushing to do. When we came to extract from...

    Nuc to Hive

How many of the frames have eggs and brood?

    Apiguard treatment

It's my understanding that if you use Apiguard in the brood box, and the following season you put the brood box on top when doing a demaree, you shouldn't then take the honey that the bees store in that box as it empties of brood. Am I correct in that?

    First sting

Read your Greek mythology. It explains how the bee got its sting, and why it dies having used it. It was Zeus's gift to Melissa.

    First sting

It's all the fault of Zeus.

    Foods/drinks to avoid before inspecting?

Because I have to go up a set of steps to get to the hives I restrict myself to two double whiskies before an inspection.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    Sweated.

    Small Extractor recommendation?

I was happy with Simon the Beekeeper's four-frame manual extractor when I only had three or four hives. The twelve-frame electric job is now a necessity.

    Tree and shrubs

Leeds council has identified the park opposite my home as a potential site for woodland planting. It's proposing a mixture of taller and shrubbier species. I intend to respond to the notification and will suggest trees that are valuable to bees (I'm doing this for the greater good, not...

    sterilising jars

Did the boxes come with lids loosely on, as they do for the round ones listed in their hobby beekeeping section?

    sterilising jars

Unfortunately F&H only do round jars in their honey jar section, otherwise they would certainly be my supplier.

    sterilising jars

It's the most boring part of beekeeping. I used to rinse every jar and dry it in the oven. This year I'm using the dishwasher. Either way, there's limited space. Last weekend I needed three cycles of the dishwasher to clean two boxes of jars, and they weren't completely dry when they came out...
