    Plastic foundation

Sorry to resurrect a long dead thread, but does anyone know of a supplier of plastic foundation for commercial frames?

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Built some more crown boards out of pallet wood. They look a bit rustic but should do the job well enough.

    Current trends in mite treatment

I went with apiguard on all my full colonies despite the bbka fella saying it would stop my queen's laying and I shouldn't use it in autumn. All nucs got apistan as I don't have ekes for them and the strips are convenient. Plan to OA Vape during the winter so have a gas vap just need to get...

    Northumberland Honey Queens

I purchased five virgins from them this year and got four mated to overwinter have them a in poly nucs now. I also got a mated queen from them to requeen a horrid colony I had this year. To early to tell what sort of temper they are but will report back on them next season.

    Chalk brood genetics question

This was kind of why I was asking the question. If drones are also carriers of the gene then, if you're in an area with lots of chalky drones then there's a good chance that if you raise your own queen's they will end up susceptible?

    Chalk brood genetics question

Have identified a line of queen's we have that are a bit chalky so will be sorting those out next year. This led me to wondering about the genetics of it. Do we know if the susceptibility for chalk brood is solely passed down along the queen line or are there chalky drones out there that will...

    Never had colonys like it.

Not a huge amount in our hives either here in Essex. Put some extra supers on last week as they'd finally moved up into the bottom supers, will hope for a flow through August.

    Timing nucs for sale.

Won't be until next year. I need to set up with some national kit as all my kit is on commercial frames at the moment. Was going to use long hives to provide the initial brood and bees first. And introduce virgin queen's to get mated and let them build up. I brought in virgins from...

    Timing nucs for sale.

I'm looking to start producing a few nucs for sale next year and I'm just wondering about he timings involved. When would you experienced hands at nuc production start nucs off with a view to build up to overwinter? And when is the main demand for nucs? Early spring or during the summer...

    Our little apiary

That's our stack of spare kit. ;) I'd rather they were all on the colonies. :D

    Our little apiary

Here is our current main apiary. We have another site lined up for the futures and are hunting around for a third. Our site on the allotments will probably be given up because I don't feel particularly comfortable going through hives with so many people around.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had to get the mated virgins in our mating nucs out as was worried they would be out of space. Unfortunately their poly nucs still haven't arrived from maisemore so moved some into some bait hives. On had drawn a QC and looks like they've left and now another looks like this. So I may have...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

This is a possibility as I have one space left in one of my mating nucs but it's only a two frame slot so she wouldn't have much time in it before running out of space.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I have some of the cages from bee equipment but they don't fully push in around the edges just using pegs at all four corners.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

New queen arrived by post today. I've run out of mated queen's and have one colony that have become positively horrid last quick look in had three stings through the suit before I'd even lifted a frame. So tomorrow I have the fun job of requeening them. Plan is to double suit and glove and...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Visited the main apiary yesterday. All the splits and swarms checked and they all have a laying queen except 1. The swarms have feeders on as they're all on foundation so hopefully can get a few boxes of comb drawn. The queen less one was a swarm that we collected and they drew some comb and...

    Woodland Question

Resurrecting this old thread with a question. My new apiary is sat on the edge of Hainault Forest and I'm wondering what sort of summer flow I could expect, if any. Looking at the woodlands trust list of species in this ancient woodland can anyone shed a light on what is good and what's...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Five virgins queen's arrived safely from Northumberland honey. Have put them in to the mating nucs but left the tabs on the cages. Will see how they're being treated saturday morning and take the tabs off if they look ok.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Have five virgins arriving tomorrow so I've converted some old nuc boxes into two and three frame mating nucs. Went to the apiary today and pulled a frame of brood and bees for each nuc and brought them home. Will introduce the virgins when they arrive tomorrow.
