    Collecting smoker fuel

I collect rotten wood from our forest apiary and use cardboard packaging and a straw fire stater to get it going. I also make all my hive parts out of pallet wood other than the boxes themselves which I buy the pine multi packs from bee equipment when they have them in stock. If I ever get...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

I picked up a colony from a tree fall in a forest last year. From the state of the comb it was obvious that there had been a colony in that tree for some time however no way of knowing if it was this colony or not. The bees were very dark and noticeably smaller than mine possibly due to the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Collected the off cuts of insulation kindly provided by the rugby club we're helping out with a new apiary. All hives wrapped and top insulated now.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Sorted out the back garden hives today. Feeders off and mouseguards on five poly nucs and one late swarm in a full box. One of the nucs and the swarm still felt a bit light so I've added fondant to them. Will pick up the insulation on Wednesday so will get all the full hives a slab of...

    Plastic Frames

Sounds like a gap in the market for you Patrick. 😜

    Show me the honey.

Oddly enough we've moved hives away from an allotment site this year and the plot holders are all asking us to bring them back. Our apiary there which is now being re-established has green netting around it to a height of six feet and other than one occasion when a hive turned nasty and I had...

What's flowering as forage in your area

There's a huge hedge of this plant on my walk to the station and the bees are all over it. Ignoring the ivy next to it in preference.

    Plastic Frames

Yeah this is my problem as well. Not a lot of kit out there for those of us on commercial. That's the reason I advised some newbies I'm mentoring to go for nationals in the end even if it's not the best system. I think it's just easier to be inline with 90% of the country. I have some...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Popped up to get the mouseguards on our forest apiary. Most felt pretty heavy put some fondant on a couple as it's what I had available and I'm not sure when I can get back to this apiary. Still plenty of activity and pollen going in.

    Buckfast

I have purchased queen's from Northumberland Honey this year. One mated but the rest as virgins. Will be interesting to see how they go next year compared to my original stocks.

    Mead and wine making

Started a couple of brews yesterday. A spiced mead and a tea wine both using the recipes from city steading on YouTube. Both of those are bubbling away nicely in my wardrobe. Tonight I have and brew coffee to start another wine with and the final brew for the year will be five gallons of a...
