    Buckfast Abbey

In my recent contact with the abbey they unfortunately seem to be a little anti Brother Adam, dont rate Buckfast bees in preference for AMM.

    Varroa mesh

Many different and affordable options from China, I was looking at buying but you cant get it through Portuguese customs without huge import duty, think you get away with it in the UK? I buy alloy wire made locally, costs out at €60 for 40 floors

Winding down a hive to ship it overseas

Agreed, hives are dirt cheap in Portugal. Here is an example, the first one i came across and this is expensive but comes with a wood certificate? I dont know what frame type you are on but the widely available ones are reversivel which is british national type and lusitana which is like 12x14...

    Pro vap 220

It will be usual UK voltage around 230v now harmonised in Europe, the device cant change that, 230V -10% +6% (i.e. 207.0 V-243.8 V) You need to add the loss of efficiency of the inverter, they run from 70% to about 90% for really good one. The big problem is the start up power which can be 2...

What Brad nailer should I get?

Its not just the nails, it is the splinters of wood that come flying off, anything in line with the action, eye protection is an absolute must.

    VV Behaviour

Strangely I have always found the opposite works best for me, advice is restricted entrances and long grass, the hornets hover near the entrance well knowing they only have to move a few cm to strike, they often just sit on a landing board near a reduced entrance and wait until a bee comes...

    Asian Hornet update

I think that is what they use here, 12v-1500v and a solar panel to keep the battery topped up. The box is only about 20cm square and low cost

    Asian Hornet update

I honestly dont know, there are both, it is also big business here one of my customers is a fabricator, I understand it is all he is making now due to such high demand. VV hunt down anything that moves, I have a mark on one of the hives, like a propolis dot, every single VV that flies past goes...

    Asian Hornet update

Yes that is the arpa, it works well for the foragers but as Karol says it isnt a long term solution, VV have a varied diet, there was a picture circulating of them eating a dead mouse, I have even seen them attacking small lizards in previous years.

    Asian Hornet update

I think some have used a similar mesh, personally unless the hive is being overrun I doubt it has much positive effect. I have seen hornets hawking 3 metres from the hive entrance quite regularly. The bees do a really good job of making a safety in numbers, you can see it in the video, a bee...

    Asian Hornet update

As I found out this year you need a large amount of hornets to make the method work. It is a great problem when you only have a couple of hornets to chase around but it is so time consuming. I have been working with a local beekeeper this year and we have both had very few hornets after treating...

    "Asian Hornet" seen in Cornwall

Limited, the biggest problem is the time required to treat. The favourite this year seems to be arps, these are good for foragers but the nest still releases queens. I've had mixed feedback from people who have used it here, some really like it and others havent found it to work although I dont...

    "Asian Hornet" seen in Cornwall

I haven't had it this bad, at the worst in 2015 I had around 4 hornets per hive. When I left for the UK last week I had around 3 hornets per 5 hives, treated for a few hours on Sunday and that reduced to a few hornets per apiary of over 100 colonies. The luck comes in getting the queen. Yes, I...

    "Asian Hornet" seen in Cornwall

It is even worse than that, killing nests is now illegal and the government has given up. This article is from Jornali and translated. At i, Quercus denounces "total dismissal of the State" and warns of the dangers that the removal of nests by citizens represents There are municipal Civil...
