Cutting Plan for a National Nuc

I used Martin Adams plans 10+ years ago and falsely thought that I might have them. I did find them on the SBAI site though, link here SBAI Martin Adams nuc cutting plan

    Making candle moulds

I thought the preparation prior to and cleaning up after extracting honey was a faff but then after having a go at candle making I now realise it's a doddle.

    Honey price

I think their comments about the prices achieved by more commercially savvy sellers are a mix of jealousy, obstinacy and wanting to live in the past. They moan about the local accepted/ceiling retail price increasing to ~£6 per jar (for both 340 and 454g, up from £5 two years ago) but don't...

    Honey price

At my local BBKA honey show recently there were comments about some local small scale beefarmers charging £5.95 for a 12oz jar and saying that the 'right' price was £4.50-£4.75 for a lb jar.

    glue or bin?

I dropped an Abelo super last month with similar results. I've glued it back together with some two part epoxy glue as it's what I had available and it's held but I have yet to try it with full frames. Gorilla superglue did not work I've repaired other poly hives using a polyurethane Gorilla...

    Honey Jar Labels ???

I'm a satisfied Nantmoel customer. Better, more professional labels definitely lead to an increase in sales both from existing and also additional outlets. Cost was similar to Moobee above which was an increase over a transparent Thornes label but the look (and sales) were far superior.

Cost of sugar or fondant 2022

It was Bako Western who cover where I live (Warwickshire) and there is a £100 membership fee and according to their website 'Membership is only granted to Master Bakers or a trade closely affiliated to the bakery trade.' There are a couple of small scale commercial bakers operating out of some...

Cost of sugar or fondant 2022

My local Tesco has recently stopped stocking 5kg bags and this morning there was a docket on the 2kg shelf saying it was discontinued. The thought of dealing solely with 1kg bags might be the nudge I need to look at bought in syrup or fondant.. When I last investigated Bako they wanted me to...

Is this the best extractor EVER ?

I had the same Giordan extractor before a 20 frame Lyson, I'm not convinced it's always quicker with the larger extractor. It probably is overall but with different bottlenecks - uncapping mainly.

    Courgettes as nectar source

Thanks, Google translate helped. I think the drought prevents any firm conclusions based on my experience. I took my supers off 4+ weeks ago and there has been enough to keep them ticking over but nothing to make me regret not leaving a super in place.

Would the sulphuric acid be any more acidic than honey or in itself harmful to the bees?

Wax moth are rampant this year

Yes, concentrate on any frames that have pollen or have had brood in them. I have about 90 supers to treat with dipel over the weekend which I'm slightly dreading. I'd like to do it outside but that would lead to a wasp/robbing frenzy so will try and do it in the storage shed. I'm also going...

Hot air gun - less good for radial extraction?

I've yet to hear of any large scale hobby beekeeper/sideliner small scale beefarmer/full time beefarmer use a hot air gun. Cold knife/fork, hot knife, flail uncapper, semi-automated and automated knives yes, but hot air gun not seen or recommended to the best of my knowledge.

Selling honey from the hives in the UK

A farm shop that sells my soft set honey stacked it on a shelf next to a freezer unit, right next to the heat exchanger. No problem until the recent heat wave but it's no longer soft set, more a cloudy clear honey at the top and a viscous set honey underneath. The jars felt warm even at an...
