For my sins ,in the past I have successfully nursed pathetically weak colonies right through winter.
Feed and varroa levels are the most important factors.

Take all the honey-that was the object of putting the supers on.
Feed them sugar for Autumn and start afresh in spring with untainted kit.
If all else fails carefully grind three small flats on the shaft and use it directly in the chuck.
I've done this and it works well.
Doesn't have to be perfect as its not running at any great speed.
