Latest snake-oil varroa treatment pretending not to be a varroa treatment

On this tack has anyone experience of the CO2 v testing kits?

Latest snake-oil varroa treatment pretending not to be a varroa treatment

I'm told (😉) that with cardboard of the right consistency (cereal packets where they use cheap cardboard with a slightly grainy fibrous quality to the touch, my kids are sick of aldi home brand shreddies!) then the bees will chew away the strip as the nest gets closer and they're working on that...

Latest snake-oil varroa treatment pretending not to be a varroa treatment

I do wish Randy would overcome his resistance to trying cardboard strips hung vertically between brood frames, in my minds eye it just forces more contact between the sticky oxalic and the bees than, especially with single brood where there's no opportunity to place, pads between boxes. Anyway...

Is there a clever way to avoid cast swarms

Wait until the queens are ripe then pull them, colonies will only throw casts if there are sealed queen cells left, so just pull any which are mature enough to fight it out and destroy the rest.

Just for some fun.... an excuse to smile.

If anyone gets a pet newt they should call it tiny, when asked why say "cos he's my newt"

Sheet material non wood for clearer boards.

I use correx for various jobs, an 8 x 4 sheet of 4mm correx comes in at about £5 and cuts up to make 10 national footprints, wont rot (apart from if its left in the sun) but does "sweat" a bit as it doesn't breath.

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

It's not black and white. While virgins may mate within subspecies out of preference, the mechanisms honey bees have to avoid inbreeding make the likelihood of this to happen exclusively in a mixed drone environment over a few seasons matings vanishingly small. Once you have introgression it...

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

How much of Seeley's work was based on Amm? A rhetorical question as, as with most bee research, the answer is none. This is quite exciting as it opens up the possibility of going over some of the same ground with a different subspecies and getting entirely new sets of data and conclusions. I...

Tiny clusters still surviving but won't amount to much.

Could be time to break out the shorts...

I broke cover and popped a few supers on yesterday, admittedly I cheated a bit as these went on colonies I condensed down from double to single brood. A lovely day where I popped about 50 crown boards and no dead uns, many colonies past crossover and looking plump, very few dinks.
