Very low varroa counts: prophylactic treatment or not?

That's new. Apologies for the error.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

As of this morning, I'm in the BFA! For me this is a milestone and was one of my goals for 2024. Thanks to all on this forum, beekeepers, bee farmers or neither, who have contributed to my beekeeping journey in any form - including through challenging my views - and thus helped me get this...

    Getting old

'better pred than dead' and 'everything needs a course of steroids before it dies' are two old semi-humourous maxims from my sector... For those thinking of avoiding heavy lifting, another option is to use normal national deep boxes for brood and for supers use nuc box sized shallows which fit...

    Still No Bees!

Or buy one, make an adapter board so it fits on the style of hive he has and let them migrate across.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Insurance companies are not interested in your health/you receiving the best care, they simply want to get you back to the UK as fast as they can so they can pawn you off on the NHS regardless of the wait you'll have rather than them have a larger bill for private healthcare. Happened to my mum...

Just for some fun.... an excuse to smile.

I also spent a lot of time with my nose in books. However, to counter your post I've just got back via Eurostar from a family holiday. Until today, I'd never heard a teenager complain that they were never going to go on a train again because it was boring as the WiFi was rubbish and 'only 3G'...

    Sad but often true.

Double Brood into Single for winter (Scotland)

In terms of insulation and feeding, I make clear crown boards and have been making 7cm ekes which stay on year round with a slab of 50mm PIR fitted in. The PIR has two cutout sections, one takeaway tub shaped and one rapid feeder shaped, all taped and centred over the centre hole on the CB. This...

    Forced Absconding

In terms of access, a cherry picker could work. We used one inside our church when there were some mould issues with some insulation recently installed and scaffolding was making it incredibly expensive until we realised the cherry picker could get in through the door. Obviously you'd use it...

    Special offer Posca pen set.

On the flip side I find the Toma nibs are poor by comparison to the Posca ones so I use a mix of both. @Gumbers thanks for pointing that out. Hope all is well with you.

    Special offer Posca pen set.

Better still, there cheaper in Tesco with a clubcard. Think similar on Amazon currently too. https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/309068395

    Queen

They may have superceded her although there's a chances inspecting upset them enough to trigger it. If there was BIAS, recheck in a week for queen cells, reduce to one maybe two good open ones if present and then leave alone for a few weeks before you recheck them.

My own queens have defensive workers

Ceri (@mbc) breeds good queens as mentioned above in a few places. Many people on here have bought them.

    Pursuit of AMM Black Bees

Well you wouldn't be a supporter of the English taking over Wales now, would you? ;) :leaving:

    Pursuit of AMM Black Bees

Yes, that's a somewhat better analogy. Still not entirely comparable- for example it's possible to neuter domestic toms and queens and possible to keep domestic cats relatively enclosed such as with catios, which benefits a lot of prey species. These alternatives are not possible with bees. In...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Continued candle making. Welcome to Narnia. SWMBO wants the kitchen back...

    Pursuit of AMM Black Bees

That's a really poor analogy- describing other races as polluting a gene pool is not ok. On the one hand you claim that AMM bees are threatened by genetics of other, imported strains. On the other you claim that despite decades of imports, AMM is still pretty significant even in the 'worst...

    Latest time to buy bees

I'd recommend putting your name down for an overwintered nuc from one of the big suppliers. There will be plenty available if you put your name down in the early autumn. That way you can get cracking next season with all winter to hone your knowledge. I'd suggest finding someone who will let you...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

You can store several shallows in it for the rest of the year when they're not on the hives post extraction. That way it will only occupy marginally more space than you currently use.
