    Spring Convention 2015

My wife and I travelled 150 miles or so Friday evening to allow me a full day on Saturday whilst she went shopping in Shrewsbury. Did wax exchange with Maisemoore, picked up some preordered stuff and had a wander around the trade halls before my first talk. Spent the rest of the day in and out...

    Ground Source Heat Pumps

Hi Mike, ah, I see, my installation missed the cut off date by a few months for retro claims as I was told. Mine is only slightly smaller than yours at 7kw and 400m loop, also on 3 phase supply. Mine is now supplemented by a 5kw turbine on a 15m mast down the field, good way mark for the bees...

    Ground Source Heat Pumps

Hi Mike, mine has done twice as many run hours as yours but you have had yours longer, which seems an oddity. I don't get RHI payment so would be interested in a chat as last year I tried to get it retrospectly and I was told I had mine installed to early to qualify. Mine too was Ice Energy and...

    Hives, bees, stuff for sale

Right, this is not mine but a local retiring beekeeper after 60 years. He was a Thornes agent and all the kit was from them, he had a clear out of the older stuff 3 years ago and this is his last lot. Location is 10 miles north of Kings lynn, collection only. Job lot only. Message me for contact...

    Ground Source Heat Pumps

Should of added that mine runs rads, all oversize by about 40%, all double panel and all pipework that is not on show is 22mm, just upstands that are 15mm. Its all about higher flow rates/ volumes with lower temperatures. I believe my ground loop is super efficient as I used more space between...

    Ground Source Heat Pumps

Hi Mike, I have a GSHP, installed it myself 5 and half years ago. It great, we have DHW and CH all year from the ground loop via the pump installed in my garage. Controls have never been a problem. As you know there is a considerable lag compared with conventional boilers when you up the stat...

    Lots of brood

And back to the original thread, lots of brood. Well I have 1 double std national hive that I would consider to have a lot of brood.....at the moment. There is currently 8 frames in the top box and 6 in the bottom box, I say a lot at the moment because it is compared to the rest of my hives...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Left at 7am, 150 miles and 4 hours later the bees were set up in the orchard and all other equipment loaded into the outbuildings. All went without a hitch, when I left the bees were just starting to venture out as the drizzle had at last stopped.

    oh dear

I have invited her down to see my hives and to the association bee disease day in May, her answer 'maybe we will see' . Also offered to show her how to use Acetic acid and melt some frames down for trading in the wax for fresh foundation, 'it would be a shame to destroy all their hard work' she...

Need to treat for varroa but am splitting the hive in about 2 weeks

Ah the old Italian Buckfast special, wondered who was still importing them :spy:
  11. Pete D

    oh dear

Not a problem any more, her last remaining hive has dwindled and died out. Nosema would be my guess as the front of the hive, top bars of frames and even the faces of the combs I could get out were covered in crap. New problem is asking her not to just leave the hives as is for a nice healthy...

Nucs for sale - Burton on Trent

I guess it's just not drone brood, unless there is a way of proving their work ethic. That was 3 weeks ago, 2-3 frames of brood, so must be 4-5 now. My over wintered 14x12 polys will need hiving or a frame or 2 bleeding off pretty soon.

Need to treat for varroa but am splitting the hive in about 2 weeks

Where is the new queen coming from ?
  16. Pete D

Our first of the year.. ( cut out )

Had a look at these last week and queen is laying well. I am more of the opinion now that an early cut out shook on to drawn comb with plenty of stores is a better option than leaving them to build up and have all sorts of frame concoctions involving elastic bands etc. Yes we sacrificed a bit...

    Worst winter ever

I would get the monitoring boards in your remaining hives quickly now the bees are active and brooding. Monitor the drop and treat if required. Also take some samples of dead bees and get them tested Good luck

    Wot no sun !

The cloud cover here was a good solar filter. Brilliant sunshine now as its moving off and cant see a thing. Camera is just my £60 point, zoom and press, I don't know anything more than that about cameras. I now its obvious but it went so cold so quickly, the birds stopped singing.
