    Asian Hornet - Update

Maybe time for a new Asian Hornet update thread as this one has been hijacked for arguing. Anyone got some real facts on the current situation in Tetbury or the Mendips ?

    Asian Hornet - Update

Is there a 2nd confirmed nest, I saw the Tetbury one but not heard about a nest being discovered in the Mendips yet.

    Asian Hornet - Update

No problem, its just an extract off of beebase from the honey sampling section. They sample for all manner of things, it tells you on the unopened sampling kit what that particular sample is being checked for. Last one I had was being checked for 'Metals'.

    Cleaning a smoker

I submerge mine (not the bellows) in a solution of washing soda overnight, usually once a week. I then find a light bit of agitation with a brush followed by a rinse off brings it up like new. I normally use the tub of solution that I keep my hive tools in, just fill it up a bit more so I can...

    Asian Hornet - Update

Results All results are sent to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) where the information is recorded on an in-house database. If the sample is found to have no contaminants in then a letter will be sent out to you by the VMD confirming the results. This process will usually take about...

Pretty sure they will want the nest intact so they can examine it for queen cells

Really? Is that a strong held personal belief / opinion of the work the National Bee Unit do ? As I understand it they collect 100 samples between them per year which take about 10 minutes each including paperwork. That's less than 2 samples each or 20 minutes of their 6 months work.

    Hiveclean

That's good then, not that its yours, but that there is someone who is responsible for checking these things. We don't want to go back to the old days of meat pumped full of steroids and growth hormones...........

    Hiveclean

I see the American equivalent agency does the same thing. This from yesterdays news....... 'The Food and Drug Administration, under public pressure to start testing samples of U.S. food for the presence of a pesticide that has been linked to cancer, has some early findings that are not so...

Are the VMD the same body that check for chemicals / medicines in meat and all other food stuffs that then ensure it is fit for human consumption.

    Treatment when no varroa evident?

I look through a lot of other peoples hives and can honestly say Varroa is the biggest problem I find, non treatment usually ends up with no bees other than splits and swarms, the original dwindles and collapses. Seen 100's of diminished colonies, colonies struggling to build up, bees with...

    VMD Staff inspection

As an SBI I did a honey sample last week on a beefarmer. Asked if I could before I visited and just filled half a jar, filled in the paperwork, left a copy with the beek and sent it off to the VMD. We all get tasked to do 1 per season and select a friendly beek to provide it.
