    Bailey comb change

You could do either. If you wait until they want to swarm you could do an artificial swarm and get the combs drawn then. Is there a queen excluder between the existing brood and the super.

Catch a swarm THIS weekend?? !!

Yes, about a week after my hives drone brood starts emerging

    Bailey comb change

I would say yes based on the information given. However peoples opinion on what a very strong colony looks like differ a lot. You are not far from me and the OSR is starting to come into flower and temperatures are on the up.

Catch a swarm THIS weekend?? !!

No sexually mature drones around, very very little drone brood about in healthy queen right hives. No swarming around here this side of Easter.

    Great, thank you

    Barcode labels

Does anyone on here supply their honey with a barcode label so the shops can scan them on their EPOS systems. If so do you just buy some small self adhesive stickers, if so where from and how is the barcode derived. Many thanks

    Asian Hornet - Update

Lots of expert advice and debate on there. Hoping the NBU will get someone on to it tomorrow as it does seem to tick all the boxes. Would be nice to get it down and off to the lab for investigation. I think there will be a lot of potential sightings and areas to monitor in the spring

What does your BKA do that's good?

My association has lectures, demonstrations, bee health days, bulk buying scheme, an education team that teaches and trains modules, the basic and husbandry. It holds workshops on honey and wax preparation for sale and the show bench, queen rearing sessions, couple of social events, honey show...

    Asian Hornet - Update

Certainly no more Asian hornets were found in Tetbury after the nest was destroyed. I am sure that a statement and advice will be forthcoming long before the active season. Why rush it, there is nothing anybody can do right now other than make sure the information they give out is accurate, so...

    Asian Hornet - Update

What is it you want to know
  17. Pete D

    Price

Its just mixed blossom. Very little OSR around here this year. A friend just got 6 buckets at this price.
  18. Pete D

    Price

30lb buckets change hands for £75 round this way (2.50 p/lb).

    Honey tasting sticks

I used to use plastic coffee stirrer sticks, these break on set honey though. Now I use plastic coffee spoons (as Finman says), 500 for a couple of quid from cash and carry (Bookers), much better. Watch out for the double dippers !

managing bees, what do you do?

That about covers it. We don't have small hive beetle yet so will have to learn those practices as the need arises.
