What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspected v quickly all my nucs. Almost all queens had stopped laying about 8 to 9 days ago based on larvae ages. Yes I was feeding daily. My queen rearing on Nicot failed to have one queen take. Checked yesterday's attempt : all cells wiped clean. Have to wait for prolonged dry weather and...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Well today was a little warmer. Yesterday when I looked at the Nicot cage I could see no eggs so I left it in teh hive without the guard on. Today when I looked I was sure I could see something but my eyesight close up is getting worse and it is a gray day and shaded. So I put on my Optivisor...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I get over 100 every year (record was 226) so am immune to venom and hardly react - even when stung very occasionally on the face/nose . Hurts for about 20-30 minutes and that's it.. (a sting on the septum brings tears to my eyes).

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Spent this am - a balmy 12C - inspecting all 8 full production hives. Potential 10 full supers, no QCs and as the weather deteriorated and the sky turned black before rain, the bees became increasingly irritable. Final inspection was in rain: returning flying bees were very bolshy but as I had...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Been feeding all my poly nucs due to appalling weather. Split two on double brood. Started Queen rearing using Nicot again - eyesight too poor to graft. Honeyed box and placed in hive from which I want to raise queens, caged queen with attendants in same hive. Will leave two days and then put Q...

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

Did you move larvae or eggs? Eggs will be eaten if in a different colony - wrong smell. If larvae, did you move between two frames of capped brood or open larvae? If capped brood, I believe bees may decide it's the wrong place and eat the eggs...

Went into winter with 7 National polynucs. Have sold 7 to date. Currently have 7 (one laying workers thrown out and new comb plus 1 QC, one swarmed). Orders for three and another five likely. Feeding nucs 1:1 sugar syrup. 250ml per nuc each day.to stimulate egg laying and drawing comb. One...

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

Easy enough if your eyesight and hand /eye co-ordination are OK. My grafting has grown steadily worse..with age. At 76 years old, I am experienced enough to know when to give up something that is not physically possible.

Try 2 was a failure. Only one egg laid.. Oh well.. it cost nothing.. Time to start real queen rearing when the next week of horrible weather ends.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Been systematically repairing old hives stands which after 10 years or so are starting to look sad.....my fault for using cheap (free) timber..

    Advice for pricing please.

I encourage parents with young children to see the bees: a clear CB on my nearest hive is always a great attraction - to adults as well.
