    thick bees

One colony were without a few frames for five days and drew these two in the void. Empty, but would have been filled with ivy before long.

    Jar Prices 2024.

It pays to get a sample. I've seen hex jars where the flats are curved and the glass thin. Putting the same amount into jars from different sources can be troublesome. For example, one F&H hex (nominally 227) used to take 235 to get honey into the base of the neck, which I believe presents...

    Jar Prices 2024.

Depends if you sell at the garden gate and the money is a minor bonus, or sell regularly through the year to retail outlets or markets. For the latter, continuity of supply is crucial, as is the cashflow to help pay the mortgage.

    Recycling brood wax?

Price according to value and the market will find you, even though sales may be minor. The sort of buyer that wants wax is likely to be selective and want quality and won't quibble over a £ or two (may even decline if you sell too cheap). Sell cappings wax for cosmetics and keep general comb...

    Recycling brood wax?

You will if you ask. I know a beefarmer from Barking who does markets out into central Essex, and he gets prices I don't in North London!

    Jar Prices 2024.

Depends whether you want to move with the times: consensus is that hex present & sell better. Few retailers use the 454 and a 340 is the new large. If you have limited stock but wish to supply customers all year (they will appreciate it) use the smaller jar. If you want it gone fast and are...

    Labels

That's a good start because in design terms most have been treading water since 1956. How many do you need? Unless you choose carefully, small print runs can be as expensive as bigger ones. Avery are recommended by many for small runs; I have not used them. Have a look at Fast Labels for a...

    Should I combine?

May have had a slow start if it superseded an old swarm queen; may have been ******** by a lack of income in August which would otherwise have kept the queen laying; may have been better off to begin with in a compact 6f nuc than rattling about in a BB. All in all, stick it in a 6f nuc and watch...

    Bee free honey

Regrettably, the majority of humans seek the cheapest food with the least inconvenience that requires the least thought. If that were not so, the giants would not rake in billions.

    Bee free honey

Looks like it's been in development for at least 3 years: https://beekeepingforum.co.uk/threads/melibio-honey.51925/ Discovered by chance that MeliBio was affected by the collapse of Silicon Valley bank in 2023 as the bank held 90% of the company assets, and here's the c-----y downmarket label...

    Buying kit in sales

If you can't find them on eBay, ring Maisemore and ask for Caroline (as I recall) who deals with eBay and will add them to the site. DN5 seconds are on at the moment and are £39.40+£9.98 delivery...

    Bee free honey

The nub of the issue is that MeliBio must develop a strong story to market a novel product to make the return to the fat cats who loaned them $7.2m to develop and bring the sugar to market. By painting beekeeping as cruel the vegan customer - emotively led but factually ignorant - will be...

Old Castle Farm Hives 6 Frame Dual Poly Nuc

Maybe OCFH are running it as a loss-leader for a while, under-cutting the competition to establish a market presence. The body of the BS, OCFH and Maisemore are almost identical and I reckon they're made in the same factory with mould alterations. I have a dream that one day those three will...

Unsure if I’ve done the right thing

No, but I will PM Wilfred to apologise, as the questions were in answer to a similar post from Graeme about feeding & winter weight. Conflation of posts demonstrates dangers of posting late at night... Graeme wanted to know which was the 'right' place to put a super of stores on a 1BB colony...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

£250 minimum spend is to deter small buyers. £16.40 is the box price for 40 boxes, collected, but buying fewer boxes by spending only £250 is likely to attract a higher box price. Pallet delivery would no doubt push box price to something painful (I didn't ask). Years ago the company would...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not if it's the main treatment, 3 times at 5-day intervals to catch the max. Winter is a one-off to get mites on bees in the absence of brood (learned from Pargyle that 'phoretic' is no longer the correct term, but cannot recall the new).
