    Weak Queenless Hive

I agree ... indeed, I agreed at Post#4 !! I can't see any point in just letting them dwindle away.

How long would you drive to an out apiary

Nice bike ....what sort of range do you get from the battery with a trailer attached ?

    Weak Queenless Hive

We don't know ... all we have is the original post - but it makes no difference if there is or isn't any brood in there .. if the doom mongers are to be believed there will either be brood in there that is affected by goodness only knows what sort of disease or there will be the remains of dead...

    Weak Queenless Hive

No ... it was 18 degrees here in the sun today, I was adding empty brood frames to hives today to get them drawn whilst I am feeding them ... I wasn't dragging every frame out and I was quick but it's not mid-winter by any stretch. If the colony is weak then what difference will having a look...

    Pallet Wrap

It's not necessary to pallet wrap ... what you need to do is treat them for wax moth (sulphur burn/Dipel) before you store them then stack them with a board on the top and bottom of the stack cinched down with a hive strap. That will keep the moths out - but, unless you treat them before...

    Weak Queenless Hive

Goodness ... you are all so pessimistic ... bees can dwindle without any disease being involved - yes, be aware of it but it's not every colony that has some varroa in it that is disease ridden ! We don't know any more than in the first post where the OP was talking about trying to rescue them...

    Weak Queenless Hive

If they were sick I would agree with you but it sounds from the OP that they have been queenless and not treated for varroa early enough - they may not be sick .. just low in numbers. I'd be having a good look at the frames before I waste them. They will get robbed out if he just leaves them to...

    Weak Queenless Hive

So ... you leave them to dwindle ? The odds are that, if they are truly queenless, they will drift to the other strong hive or worse still the strong hive will rob them out with an equal chance of disease spreading (if there is any disease). As I said originally - AFTER treating for varroa...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Amazing what they can put up with ! Good job Steve..

    Weak Queenless Hive

But ... with no brood in the box a blast with OA will be 97% effective, perhaps 2 blasts and check the forced drop on the board - why waste the bees that are left there - Ivy still in bloom so you are not detracting from the strong hive you would be adding to their workforce. Clean out the...

God I love growing our own

I like french beans too - but 'er indoors prefers runners so I grow both - usually Cobra - five or six plants on a wigwam will feed an army ! They are climbers and seem to do much better for me than dwarf ones .. They freeze really well as well. I think the key to growing good beans is lots of...

God I love growing our own

I grow a mix of Whitelady and Scarlet Emperor - they are both good croppers - I think the Scarlet Emperor has a slightly stronger taste but I pick them both before they get too big and stringy so neither have a really strong 'bean' flavour to them. We've got a fair few meal sized packs in the...

God I love growing our own

The gift that keeps on giving...another meal of runners...and there's at least another two pickings on there and they are still flowering ...these are Whiteladies and I've been picking the same 10 plants since May.

    Weak Queenless Hive

No .. waste of time donating brood to a weak hive. If it is truly queenless combine it with your strong hive and make the most of the bees (and if there is any brood left). It's too late now for sensible requeening - either letting them make one or buying one in. Once you have treated, if...

    Thin to thick

Must be winter ... usual indicator is the 'how many pints or pounds do you need to a litre of sugar solution to make ir 2:1 or 1:2' thread ... answer ...who cares ? The bees certainly don't !

    Recycling brood wax?

No ... I sell mostly to regular punters and through a retailer who is based in an antiques centre ...`can't fail if you can find somewhere selling antique furniture and wooden items. You are never going to retire on it but it gives you a better return than trading wax in for foundation. If you...

    Honey extraction services

100 supers a day .. without mechanised uncapping and extraction is an exceptional achievement. I have a 15 frame motorised extractor and uncap manually (and I've tried lots of different uncapping methods) and I average about 30 minutes per super when I include uncapping, loading, spinning...
