What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not if the science is to be believed ... they need to keep the hive temperature up so tend to use more stores if they are cold ... if you have not got insulation on your hives - good time to get it on and keep it on.

Is beekeeping hard? And if so, why?

Beekeeping, like keeping any animals or poultry for food production purposes, requires some basic knowledge and understanding of what you need to do with them to manage them, without this a new beekeeper will not last long or will struggle. Bearing in mind that, unlike most livestock, they are...

    Time to change our tune?

Exactly the position I take - I tell punters that ask that it appears to help my hay fever and other's buy it for the same reason but I make no claims about it's medical efficacy.

    Time to change our tune?

To be honest ... I have no desire to convince anyone whether honey is helpful to their hay fever - you can rabbit on as long as you like about placebo effects, lack of scientific evidence, blind tests, control panels etc. I know it works for me and I'm sure others feel the same ...judging by...

Selling, we are doing it wrong.

The Nigerian Prince I'm related to left me $15million in his estate as I was his only living relative ... I must get around to sending the lawyers in Lagos my bank details, card details, passport copy, driving licence copy, national insurance number and my birth certificate along with my bank...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I inherited a morbid fear of spiders from my mother who was terrified of them .. I can deal with them these days - a jar and a bit of thin card and they either go outside or into the garden shed .. My father (much to my mother's concern) just used to pick them up and remove them. Oddly, I did...

    Time to change our tune?

Or as a hay fever sufferer experiencing the relief that a spoonfull of honey a day has on the symptoms ! Personal experience, perhaps, but I have tried with and without the honey, with and without the Loratadine and omitting either of them really does make the symptoms worse. I can't manage...

    Summer review

Goodness Podilla, we have no idea about what you must be going through over there. I find my bees and looking after them is a welcome relief to the stress of modern life and hopefully your bees have the same effect on you. We hear a lot about the Russians targetting your power supplies - as...

    Summer review

Glad to hear you are OK Podilla ... your valley looks lovely - But climate change seems to be affecting you as it does for the rest of the world. Hope you had a good season with your bees, I often think about you when I see the dreadful news of the war situation over there. Keep safe, you know...

    New job anyone?

Can't think there will be many people with this peculiar skill ... "Individuals with experience in inspection of bee colonies and with liaising with UK Home Office staff over the importation of bees will be preferred." Perhaps they have someone in mind ...

    What’s your labour rate?

Having owned and run a small business (35 staff £3.5m turnover) I think this is the reality of a lot of small businesses. The owner takes all the risk, is probably the last one to get paid when times are tough and the one who carries the can if anything goes wrong ... these are the businesses...

    New job anyone?

Linked In isn't like that ..it's more about connections and networking between business and professional people. I don't participate but I know a lot of people who do and find it quite useful. But for those who are not subscribers (and it's free if you do)...

Insulating for a low consumption hive - review of book by Jean Riondet (La Ruche Basse Consommation D'Energie)

Pretty much as I discovered with my super insulated long deep hive nearly 13 years ago ..

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Our last dog used to catch them and eat them - disgusting animal. Our latest one looks at them, looks at me and then moves out of their way !

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yes ... those big black ones that look at you with the attitude ... you think I'm going to move ? You are just a human and I'm a SPIDER ...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hefted all mine ... now totally nailed to the floor, can't move them .. would have taken the feeders off but there were still a few bees in there and no suit or gloves and in my lunch break decided I'd been there before and discretion was safer ... Lots of bees visible through the clear...

Getting the lids off Thorne's honey buckets

Are you talking about the rectangular ones with a honey gate ? I've got a couple - they are really good but lid removal should come with an even sterner warning that the sticker that comes with them when they are new ... words to the effect 'Lids can be hard to remove' is a bit like where it...

    Are you still inspecting? November?

Why ? If they have a good amount of honey and you have the hives up to weight for winter why do you feel they also need fondant ? In spring, if they feel light, is the time for fondant.

    Are you still inspecting? November?

So ...bit late for uniting prior to winter ? Bit late for requeening ? I'm just a hobbyist but if these things were necessary this late then IMHO they were necessary much earlier ? No matter how mild it is the bees are getting sorted for winter and fiddling of this sort is just unnecessary...

    Are you still inspecting? November?

So what's a good reason at this time of year and what can you do about anything you found ?
