    Winter Prep

More if they are low on stores and need a top up. I combined my two hives as one was weak. I had not intended to take a huge amount of honey to avoid feeding syrup going into the winter but I don't want to have the hive stacked too high either to have less space for the bees to heat.

    Winter Prep

Is there any issue storing a super or broodbox that is full of capped frames over winter with the view of giving back to the bees come springtime to save feeding syrup? I was considering to wrap the entire box in plastic and keep somewhere cool for the winter and put back on once the bees have...

    Storing supers for winter

If I don't extract and save the frames as a food top up for next spring, do I apply the same method as above?

    Storing supers for winter

    Great, thank you for this

    Storing supers for winter

What do people mean by wet and dry? Also are you referring to the entire super with frames of honey/ nectar?

    Combined hives.... What now?

Thank you, this seems like a simple option while deciding on getting a freezer

    Combined hives.... What now?

Thanks Enrico, how do you suggest to store the frames? If I can avoid buying a freezer I will.

More money to spend so. Thank you for the feedback.

    Combined hives.... What now?

No cleaning or anything? There's not much room in the freezer either for an entire brood box of spare frames...

    Combined hives.... What now?

I combined two hives using the newspaper method. Currently I have: brood box, QE, super, broodbox, super. My intention is to remove one brood box, harvest what honey I can from one super and leave the bees with the other super of honey going into the winter. What do I do with all the...

    First year, first swarm...

I went back into the original hive yesterday. Removed the second queen cell that I had left from last week. There was an open queen cell there this week as well. Is this normal if there is no queen?

    First year, first swarm...

Very good, that's a clear explanation and logic. I have removed the second one today. There is an open queen cell and the original is still there and not smooth. Will check again at the start of June to see if there are eggs.

    First year, first swarm...

Yesterday was quite eventful. My hive (a strong nuc I got last year and now with a super) swarmed into the neighbours garden. Three hours later and a hive inspection complete everyone was in a cardboard box for the night. Purchased a nuc this morning to put them in, feed in the top so waiting...

    How big is your entrance!!!!

I removed mine completly on the basis of using a mouse guard. First winter at it so will see how we get on.

    Cluster under the floor

So I took out the entrance reducer completly and installed the mouse guard. I blocked off below the entrance and the gap where the inspection board would slot in also. Problem appears to be solved. Thanks all.

I'll sort something out tomorrow so. Thank you

    Cluster under the floor

So I removed the reducer all together and put on the mouse guard. Blocked off below the hive with some wood, now they're clustering from the back. I've just removed the inspection board completly to see if that deters them.

    Cluster under the floor

Maybe just lucky then. Got a sneaky peak in too :)

    Cluster under the floor

Both are done now, easier to fiddle the entrance in the dark. Thanks for the replies.
