Hygienic bees beating varroa - a myth?

I agree. This might already be happening in Estonia and Finland where OA has been used for 20 years.

Hygienic bees beating varroa - a myth?

Reports coming from Sardinia, Estonia and Finland beekeepers suspect the effect of oxalic acid is not the same as it used to be. A fact from Finland is that earlier it was strongly advised to use oxalic acid only once a year. Today all commercial beekeepers use it twice, late autumn and early...

Hygienic bees beating varroa - a myth?

Did the lecturer speak about VSH bees at all? VSH bees clearly are the most important step forward in the road to treatment free bees and they are hygienic, they take out only varroa infested larvae.

VSH genes can be found in all bees. Arista foundation has at this moment a theory of 4 different additive genes. All 4 =100% resistance, 1 =20% resistance https://aristabeeresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Buckfast-VSH-Single-Drone-project-2014-Results-11-feb-2015.pdf...

    Over Wintered Queens

Finman, in my reply: winter month= month they do not (in greater amount) make brood When brood rearing is going on consumption is more, and depends on the colony strength and ability/willingness to rear brood. The whole winter consumption (September-May) is by me around 15kg. In the November...

    Over Wintered Queens

I have done quite a lot of beekeeping consulting work all over Finland over the years and had the change to see other peoples hives. As Finman said, all of them have had insulated hives. Of course they cannot be compared to my hives, different beematerial, different location etc., but I have...

    Over Wintered Queens

Bees do not need insulation in winter, maybe some in spring is for advantage. This fact is however very hard for beekeepers to understand. If bees are kept warm in winter they do not develop in spring, you in England should know this because Brother Adam proved if with experiment in your country.

Ups, meiosis of a drone... From Hive and the Honeybee, 1993, page 238: "The reduction division of a drone matures a spermatozoon by a meiotic process that aborts the reduction division. Consequently, all sperm of a drone are genetically identical and are genetic replications of the genome...
