What did you do in the Apiary today?

Found on the hive floor I have been a little slow in changing the floor on one of my hives. This was a swarm that hived itself last july in a stack of boxes that i keep in a field near my house. Sorted them out last august and only had a mesh floor with a normal entrance to use. When...

Slow Cooker use for candle making - any experiences?

Then put the wax to be melted in a plastic container eg a soup container and put this in the water at the desired temperature. When wax melted, lift out container carefully (its hot!) And pour the wax into your mould. Much cleaner and tidier, leaves your slow cooker to work another day.

    Wheelbarrow for moving Nationals

Be careful with the horsey barrows. When i checked them although the sides were higher, the bottom of the pan was still to narrow to accommodate a national hive and as an earlier poster said, they were pricey!

    Wheelbarrow for moving Nationals

The advantage of an actual wheelbarrow over the flat platform built over a wheelbarrow base is that it has sides which means that you can load all the various odds and ends eg smoker and fuel around the hive being transported without them all falling off over bumpy ground. It also pays to check...

    Wheelbarrow for moving Nationals

Last year i went into Homebase (other sheds are available!) In Rugby and discovered by accident the ideal barrow, 100litre branded Saxon with a puncture proof wheel (we have a lot of blackthorn), a polyethylene pan and steel frame. The only disadvantage was that it was flatpacked but that did...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

At last some sun Most unusual the sun's actually out and the temperature is in the high teens. Blackthorn starting to come out in a few patches and plum trees just starting to come into bud, just in time for the bullfinches. Hives bringing in yellow/orange pollen and will aim to go through...

    French honey price

On the French stall at Southam market, they were selling all their 500g jars of honey at the same price including spring, summer, bramble and one other that i can't recall - perhaps chestnut?

    French honey price

They had various types. Some were simply spring (looked like rape), summer, floral and a couple of single source types which i can't recall.

    French honey price

On Sunday, there was a 'French' market in Southam, a small town some 3 miles to the west. Amongst the stalls was one selling French honey. I was somewhat amazed at the price - £12.50 for 500g ie just over a pound in weight. Looked to be nice honey but more than twice the retail price of local...

    Painting a poly nuc.

Perhaps buy a tester pot of a dark colour eg green and mix with some of your white. You will not need a lot. Just painted a poly nuc with cream smooth sandtex which did not use a lot for 2 coats.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had to stay in and watch the rain yet again as didt the bees! Role on spring.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Honey bees dont use daffodils in my understanding. But the bees don't always read the same books! This morning with very light winds and strong sun with temperature in low teens, my bees were very busy working 4 early large trumpet daffs that are in full bloom and obviously providing something...

    Tradex ''on or off''

Brian Apologies have just realised you are nearer to M40 than M1. M40 will be ok once that have cleared up after lorry problem so straight up M40 to junction 15 then up A46 and turn off at Stoneleigh/university junction. Should be easy once you get to M40.

    Tradex ''on or off''

Snow update ' Please continue to update us. If the minor roads are anything like ours I will give, regrettably, Beetradex a miss. I was coming to spend quite a lot of cash!!!' Brian just to update you. I managed to escape from my lane this morning and even return. The main roads are ok with...

    Tradex ''on or off''

Currently the main roads around Stoneleigh are reasonably clear. I live some 12 miles as the bee flies to the south east of Stoneleigh and normally cut across country on very minor roads to arrive directly opposite the site entrance. Tomorrow i will be going up to southern Coventry picking up...

    Tradex ''on or off''

I live about 12miles down the road and we have had little or no snow in this area. No problems on the roads hereabouts and none expected. The answer as the irish say is 'you shouldn't start from there'.

    Beetradex coming up

Assuming that you are in Stratford on avon rather than the location on your profile, you should definitely go. Make a list if what you are looking to buy and try hard to stick to that. Much better show than the BBKA and it is on your doorstep.

    Label software.

Avery label software Avery have free software on their website which works very well with their labels (may well work with other labels). Easy to design your own labels with pictures if required. If you don't want to sell commercial quantities of honey, it is easy to run off labels for each...

Bees ?like ?don't like red velvety gloves

My black gloves rarely get attacked I wear thin black gloves all the time so would suggest it may be the velvety texture that irritates them rather than the colour.
