Your right it is a try-square - fixed right angle in metal - also have a couple of Aldi long adjustable clamps as well - will possibly make a start after dinner 👍🏻went with Evostick exterior glue.

Much appreciated but need some decent PVA for other bits around the house. Good point on the diagonal measurements - got to build an arbour later this year so set square will be needed anyhows - and an excuse to escape the house for B&Q

I’ve got to start assembling mine - need a set square for the right angle and some outside wood glue before starting to assemble this week after work. Also ordered another 10 brood frames and foundation so have 20 plus the end board for 9 spare - so plenty to be getting on with.

Well done 👍🏻 will look forward to an update on Saturday. Have you removed the branch from the temp hive and replaced with frames yet? Alex

Do you have Wendy on FB? Can find her on the Ashford Beekeepers group - she’s brilliant at answering any questions on FB messenger, can be v useful.

I never have any luck with Alliums - Will (once they grow) have about 40’ of borders full of Dahlias and self seeded borage frollowing planting some last year - and a 9’ high Buddleia tree which hoping the bees will like. It’s the novices training at Ashford beekeeping association - they do...

On a brighter note cakes done for tomorrow - will only be bringing half the fruitcake as a bit too much cake otherwise

It might be worth reading The bad beekeepers club by Bill Turnbull - everyone makes mistakes and Bill explains some of his rather dramatic ones - what it does show is dust yourself off and everything can be sorted 👍🏻

My turn for baking cakes this week - ginger cake (on left) and boiled fruit cake (on right).

Will see you tomorrow afternoon - there are a couple of us on here going to the novices classes. Michael is the apiary manager, he and Wendy have been running the classes. A few of us got a bit lost - the classes through the field gate and round the corner to the left 👍🏻

That’s where I’m hoping being able to wander within a few meters with my phone should provide the same information - fingers crossed 🤞

Never had a Tanagotchi, a bit too old for that craze 🤣 although being able to monitor internal temperature and humidity could be quite useful particularly in winter I think.

Well for I suppose just the interest I’ve ordered a Hive Heart 3 for internal monitoring of the hive, not sure that it will be any benefit, and certainly won’t replace hands on inspections but interesting to see the use of modern technology to beekeeping and I like gadgets 🤣

Im down Willesborough end so the Hythe road recreation ground - more than happy to help, nice to have another Urban beekeeper in town 👍🏻 Sounds like same plan as me, starting with one as hoping will be able to source a NUC, although not likely to get two, but can hopefully artificially swarm...

sounds like pretty much what I will be doing. Although can’t quite plump for 2 cedar hives with the same frames should be interchangeable - and can use (now empty and same frame size) NUCs for swarm control. I seem to have spent months reading on the various hives, even the thermosolar hive for...

Not at all, mainly where a lot of colonies now end up as brood and a half should halve the number of frames to be checked (11 instead of 22) and was the advice from the local association 👍🏻
  18. Nighthaunt

    Newbie from Kent

It’s good advice on two hives - I’m starting with one as can only possibly source one NUC this year, and can then convince the other half to let me expand to two hives, was never the plan to remain at one hive but it’s a case of aligning what I can do to domestic restrictions and availability...

I waited to attend the local association course before ordering anything so didn’t go in blind and was comfortable handling the ladies. In terms of the 14 x 12 was after having a chat with the experts who said although I could run a brood and a half hive it effectively doubles the number of...

Good advice - the club apiary is about 5 miles away so fingers crossed could accommodate in short term. There are a few beekeepers locally (not on my road but someone has a hive in their garden about 1/2 mile away that I know of as a minimum) so really hoping - probably a vain hope however. I’m...
