Sharing of apiaries - good or not good?

We share one of our apiaries, after we pestered the council to provide us with space on an allotment site. We have 4 beekeepers with 2 hives each. We don't share equipment, but we do share the work of keeping the apiary mown and tidy. It seems to work very well, and it's always helpful to...

The coming winter - a worry

21.02.2012, surely? Let's not create a false sense of security. In any case, I'll have been cheated out of my Ice Age. "Consensus of scientists" agreed in the 1960's that the glaciers would be down to Hadrian's Wall by Year 2000, or 2010 at the latest, and probably down to London. Finland...

wasp nest 100yds from my hives.

If you have an Aldi nearby, these are apparently on offer from Thursday 1st July http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys3_14661.htm £2.99 each. I realise that a pop bottle is cheaper.

    New colony has become queenless

One of our colonies is a swarm captured on May 2nd. We left them for a couple of weeks when there were no eggs, and then for another fortnight, by which time the queen had obviously mated and started laying. There was even a little capped brood. That was on June 1st. Yesterday, our hives were...

    Lost Bees???

It certainly looks like frass or excrement of some sort. Not varroa, so baggieboing can take some comfort from that.

    Beehaus

'tis possible. Certainly Fishbee hasn't enthusiastically joined the debate, as you might expect.

    who owns equipment

Are you an Association in your own right? Or are you a division of the county Association? As I understand it, Assocations are merely affiliated to the BBKA, so breaking that affiliation would have no particular legal consequence. Obviously you'd lose the benefits of insurance and so on...

    2010 Beginner Courses

I realise that it's not trivial to assemble the list, but I noticed that a newcomer to our local BKA yesterday was offered a place on our spring course, which had officially been full for some months, simply because some of the early applicants have dropped out or aren't responding to messages...

    TheWay2Bee

Many of the registration links don't work. The user gets a 403. You've used a different URL from the one in the left hand column, which does indeed take you to the registration page. If you're a commercial beekeeper, this is the sort of thing that I think appeals. It's one that I personally...

Hey, give him a chance. It's not very colourful, is my criticism. I see that you can't yet register, so I understand that it's a work in progress, but what is the concept? What are the site's USPs? Edit: Most of the content seems to be Australian. Are you based there?

I will start the REAL Xmas thread at the proper time

Hear, hear! Christmas Eve is when the tree & deccies go up in the Melbourne household. Not a day earlier. And the tree isn't lit until after midnight mass. But then .... wahey for a merry Christmas!

Are your bee's still flying ?

Our bees were out collecting pollen this morning. Lovely bright weather, and not too chilly. We took the opportunity to take the lids off and give them their pre-winter Hiveclean treatment. Went to the local BKA apiary, and the same story - loads of bees flying. After yesterday's storms, we...

    I won

Very well done indeed - congratulations! We tried at our local show, but didn't succeed - the "brightened" honeys won the prizes, so it's good to hear of a simple unheated, strained honey being selected.
