Strapped down the hives and added weight to the roofs as the two storms approach.
Decluttered the garage and actually put the car in there (!) as there are old oaks overhanging the drive.
I think the winds may prove a test for any ash with die back too.

With winds picking up in the South West, I strapped down my two hives. They’re well protected from the elements, but better safe than sorry eh…
Woke up this morning to the car alarm wailing repeatedly every time a gust of wind shook it. Time to locate the sounder and install a muting switch I think before good neighbours become annoyed.

Collected some beaut honey. The exposed honey where the comb breaks from adjacent ones (like on that frame on the left), tastes the best ...if you dare remove the veil to have a quick taste;). I've seen it change colour (a little) on the frames in just minutes when exposed to the air. Only 4mm rain so far in February.

The wind warning for the north coast of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and the south coast of Wales has been upgraded to red for tomorrow, so once I get back from swimming I think I shall be going out to check things are as secure as I can make them. It looks to be worse right on the coast, but we're still forecast gusts of over 60mph here. Fortunately we have a little shelter to the south and west, but it's not much.

James

Quick check on the bees in between rain showers. All upright thankfully. Tightened up the straps ready for tomorrow. The hedge sheltering them is holding up well. Plenty of pollen going in and they were collecting water from my bee-barrow. Some orientation flights too.

Nice pic.
checked the straps on mine. A few bees out for a poo but the wind is picking up. It’s blown a lot if the emerging willow flowers into the pond.
Garden bees are braving the wind when the sun’s out.

Latest forecast has warnings of gusts up to 85mph for my postcode (BBC) but 68mph with the Met Office.
I‘ll go with the Met methinks.
I‘ve nailed down everything that could be blown away, including the hedgehog house!

Been borrowing horse jumps.... IMG_20220217_163559.jpg
Dadant deep with a nuc in double dadant shallow on top.

Also received the good news that this apiary has had a reprieve from being quarried next spring.

Have the hives strapped but added two bricks on each hive as belt and braces. Very scary weather

I assume we're in the calm before the storm here. The wind speed has dropped to zero according to the anemometer.

Same here James - it makes me feel a little apprehensive ...

The farm bees were battened down yesterday. The biggest fear is any trees falling.
I don't think that "Billy the Dog" will get his Friday walk up through the woods today!
