Hi there,

Picture was taken in Spain July of last year.

Is this a bee? If so, what kind?

Thanks...

Possibly a female Xylocopa violacea, the Blue Carpenter Bee, found in southern and central Europe. There are some not very great pictures here: http://www.bwars.com/xylocopa_violacea1.htm The female has the brown wings.

Carpenter bees bore holes in wood and plant stems to lay their eggs in. A solitary bee.
