Hi everyone. I have a hive in a single deep from an early summer split that has not grown much over the past two months since the split was done after the spring nectar flow. Now going into winter, a cousin who has kept bees for twenty plus years recommended I move That colony from the ten frame deep to a double story nuc for overwintering. Anyone have any thoughts why this would be better?

thank you,
Allan

I was having this discussion with someone yesterday who had 5 seams of bees in a full brood box and a group of us agreed that a single or double height nuc would be best, one in the group stated that when he last gave an extra brood box to a nuc the bees came out of the winter as one of his strongest hives.
I’ve done this with one of mine this year, giving them an ‘upper floor’ of drawn deep foundation instead of them trying to fill a full brood box.

I believe the bees prefer to move up as opposed to across.
