We extracted 3 National supers on saturday (31kg:hurray:). we were taking the wet supers back to the hive when an unwelcome visitor dropped in and had a feed as calm as you please:(

Get the squash rackets out. :willy_nilly:

YIKES!!!!! i am going to have nightmares now....horrible creatures :(

It's an Asian - Vespa Velutina Nigrithorax - despite catching a number of queens in the spring they are still about. After taking the photograph the badminton racket came out but she ducked between the frames then flew out at 100mph further along and I missed her:cuss:

Better picture - more sensible size -

According to the Telegraph (March this year) the Asian, although in France since 2004, has not arrived here yet. Hmmph, maybe nobody told your Vespa that. Is it such a rarity and is it worth notifying the local bee inspector?

Don't worry Keith, I had a friend that owned a red Vespa once, lots of chrome but the legs were all black. :)

From the picture, it conjours the image of an armoured sprinter - rather than an Italian motor scooter, of course.
